No new ships conspiracy thread

Sometimes I wonder why the flow of new ships suddenly stopped 4 years ago. Sure, we have some, but then again they’re not That hard to make and they bring a lot for us “mechanic” types. I am sure releasing a new ship will bring back some people (and their friends) to try it out, maybe to pit it against the well tested legends in pve and pvp, fly it to Colonia and back, or fight the thargoids. It’s mystifying, why such an obvious low hanging fruit isn’t used to stir up interest. The odyssey and the whole bug fixing aside, isn’t it important to periodically produce new space ships in a game about flying a space ship? NMS does it, SC does it, but we don’t anymore.

What’s your theory when it comes to no new ships policy that FD seems to employ for quite a while now?
Simply I guess Fdev isn't capable to bring such content... I assume most of the senior developers already left and look the outcome of fixing and updates is a joke. For me an evidence that the remaining Devs are scared to touch the old code base. Even the roadmap so far is sparse and no fundamental change to what we have right now. I bet we get another iteration of silence, descoping and not anytime soon.

I reckon it was envisaged that a whole new subspecies of ships would be created for atmospheric flight, be it deep diving in gas giants or stormy ELWs, but the new era hiatus to redo the planet terrain tech and get on foot perspective working delayed all that.

Don't forget the Moray Starboat for lurking under oceans!

I use an Imperial Eagle for that, that one is yet a little faster than the Eagle. But I disagree about the Panther being redundant. Something has to load and unload the carriers, that makes the Panther more relevant than ever.
Carrier Loader Panther Clipper huh....

LITERALLY gonna be me seeking out Carrier that need filling 🤣
Making FAT profits.

adding to the "old ships" crowd itt, wouldn't it be sick to go to the older systems and find an array of older ships to fly and purchase, like an asp mk ii with a huge hardpoint sticking out the front or a krait lightspeeder that gives vipers and vultures a run for their money. those are ships that have forms that exist in the current game, there's plenty of others that don't have any such successors in e:d!

new ships dont have to come as paid DLC, also im 99% sure i saw honest arf saying in a livestream (before odyssey dropped) "We have no news about any new ships, but this is space game so you would kind of think there would be something" , although i could easily be wrong. as for the many people who say we dont need new ships as theres already ships for every task in elite..... what the hell is wrong with you? why are there so many different cars/bikes/trains/planes available to buy in the real world? because massive choice is what makes life interesting. imagine how dull the world would be if there was only 1 suv, 1 mountain bike, 1 saloon car. I dont care if frontier introduce a new ship that has the exact same specs as a ship we already have, with maybe a minor tweak somewhere but having vastly different looks. variety is the spice of life

If you only want different looks, then they need to develop a shape alteration tool rather than new ships per se.

Is it new ships we want - or new ship interiors? While the flight mechanics of the in-game ships have a degree of variation, the basic cockpit interface (harking back to the original Elite) - and the view which dominates our in-game experience - is largely the same in each ship variant that we fly. Why? After all, we don't expect a Mini to have the same instrumentation as a BMW 7 series - so why should a Courier look so similar to a Cutter? It might be something I would be prepared to spend ARX on (shh - even if I had to buy them) . However, it's probably a good thing that I am not a computer programmer who would have to work out time and money to deliver such a change (incl default colours) - an accountant trying to find the money to fund it, or a lead Programmer pitching the costs vs gaming experience and the impact on Player numbers to the Board.).

When AR becomes more of a real thing instrumentation will become standard. Especially for aircraft. Companies will save heaps of money retraining pilots.

Avionics in most new aircraft are already standardized for the most part. Manufacturers use their standardized stuff outside of company / buyer custom avionics suite requests. Retraining pilots will never be a cheap thing however since the aircraft themselves all have different systems, flight characteristics, procedures, etc. You will never be able to just throw an ERJ pilot into an Airbus without going over every single MFD, MFC, etc all over again. Even aircraft from the 70s have been fitted with Garmin 'Glass' cockpits (One I used to fly being one of them after the company sold it), and you will still have aircraft owners who prefer the standard 6 pack gauge clusters, and steam gauges of the older planes.

Unless you go full monopoly (or authoritarian government total control) you will never have a 100% standard exact same avionics in every aircraft (it would be impossible even then). Bendix, Honeywell, Garmin, and every other avionics group will each try to one up each others product and the cycle will continue.

Uniformity has always been a distinct feature of ED. The same monochrome HUD in every ship, with FDEV being adamant of not even doing color customisation (though we now have a 3rd party mod that takes care of that). The same few station types are being repeated everywhere over and over. Station and carrier concourses look all the same, except for the lighting and trash levels. Even the NPCs in those concourses are the same 12 or so clone models everywhere. Seems like everything is being run by Cylons.
