No Single Player offline Mode then?

Game is not even released yet and people are freaking out about future server shutdown.
R E L A X

Don't do it, if you wanna go to it .....

:)

But yes agree - it was inevitable really that people would react to some of what has been confirmed but crying over servers shutting down is a bit too much at the moment before the game has even got out of gamma.

I've been really quite positive over the last few weeks, all the doom and gloom hasn't affected me, very much on the 'wait and see' side of the fence - however, whilst the no fully-offline mode doesn't directly affect me and it wasn't a key driver for my pledge level during the KS, I am surprised at the late hour FD have decided to announce this, when did they decide / realise that full offline is not going to be available or possible?

My concern now, how many other features will not be in the game - I was disappointed with the in-system map / no orrery, but will we now not get wings? will the damage model not make it? We won't be getting 25 ships on the 16th December (wasn't really a surprise TBH) - but today, I am wondering... what else won't we get... ever?

Looking forward to next weeks newsletter!

Hmmmm. Business opportunity. I'll be standing outside Duxford on the hard shoulder of the M11 with a gross of flaming torches and pitchforks next Friday. First come, first served. (I expect they'll sell faster than progenitor cells :D )
Although I think you intended to be humorous, beware this may still breach forum rules. (I also feel that "inciting violence" is not good form.)

P.S. If you think some people have really bad sense of humour, look-up what happens to people who shout "bomb!!!" in an airport (or just on twitter) - the police don't accept "it was a joke" as an excuse...

Which to be fair is understandable considering now-a-days anyone can have a bomb on them.

Mainly just posting to add another voice to this choir of dissent.
For people caring for multiplayer features in the first place, there was already a broad selection to choose from. What I was hoping for was a more conventional solo player approach, and I had thought Frontier was going to deliver that.
I wanted a game that I had full control over to mod and cheat (the single player kind) as I saw fit.
I wanted a game that I could pick up in 15 years and still play.
I wanted a game where other rl people and their actions are inconsequential.
Now I'll have to look elsewhere for that.
Limit Theory? (too generic, I fear)
Starport Gemini 2? (too small, maybe? and both don't feature cockpits...)

At the same time, I can see Frontier's dilemma, and while I think they took the wrong decision, the other would have caused them all sorts of headaches, too. What is going to happen now is very ugly, and I feel sorry for Michael and the rest who'll need to face the coming stool storm.

That said, however, the current line of defense is not doing them any favours. What this community needs now is a big, fat "We're Sorry" by David himself, acknowledging what is lost and offering some sort of redress to the victims of this decision, and addressing the concerns about modability and longevity.

I would be extremely disappointed if the offline mode were to be scrapped - I don't want other people buggering up my markets and exploration. I want to play at my own leisure without constantly having to go around picking at other peoples scraps. That's rubbish and I'm furious at this.

Have some rep Sir. This is the absolute least that the offline backers deserve. The actually deserve far more but this would be a good starting point.

I was kind of hoping that the smiley would be a clue there. I'm not in the general habit of delivering agricultural supplies to all and sundry, but your point is taken.

Quite disappointing. As a family father I get precious little uninterrupted game time. There is no pause (game keeps running while you are in menus) and now there is no offline mode.
It's not a deal-breaker for me, I will still play and love playing, but it still is a bad move for me.

On top of that, the network induced waiting times SUCK. Was looking forward to a seamless experience. Welcome to "could not connect to server" instead, I guess.

Maybe they can promise to give offline mode to players in another 12 months? It would have to be a promise set in stone, though!

I mean, Braben would have to practically tattoo it on his forehead!

Ugh, I didn't see that coming. I was under the impression that the P2P approach was not only to save server costs, but also because each client was able to create planet and systems in proximity on its own as well as hosting its own local chunk of the game.
I really hope the community manages to reverse engineer the server to make the game live forever. Besides, sophisticated fan projects like OOlite show that there is a serious interest in modding. I'm certain that DB and FDEV are familiar with that.

Also, I too have an always online high speed broadband connection to the internet. However, it is not 100% perfect. There are plenty of times when outside influences take over and I cannot connect... those are times when I like to sit down with my favorite game and play... *offline*.

Same here, Least Steam has an Offline mode so you can still play most of your games.

So you are making a game but not the game you promised in Kickstarter.

Is that what you are saying?
Really?

While I can understand the disappointment many people will have I can also understand that things can certainly change as new information becomes apparent. Frontier clearly has a vision they do not wish to compromise and they view their vision as far more important than a 2 year old plan that lacked hindsight. I think such things are just factors of reality we just need to be graceful about and accept.

This reminds me if when they presented their first in-system travel proposal in the DDF and everyone got upset about it. Supercruise resulted from that.
