No Single Player offline Mode then?

What everyone should know:

Kickstarter is not a store. People aren’t buying things that already exist — they’re helping to create new things. Creating things isn’t always easy. Some projects will go wonderfully, and others will run into obstacles. Be prepared for a little bit of each.

Creators are responsible for their projects. When you back a project, you’re trusting the creator to do a good job, so if you don’t know them personally or by reputation, do a little research first. Kickstarter doesn’t evaluate a project’s claims, resolve disputes, or offer refunds — backers decide what’s worth funding and what’s not.

Some projects won’t go as planned. Even with a creator’s best efforts, a project may not work out the way everyone hopes. Kickstarter creators have a remarkable track record, but nothing’s guaranteed. Keep this in mind when you back a project.

But I digress. As others have said: If you think FDEV are going to turn the servers off after a few years, why are you buying this game?

<Sigh>. Because we expected that if the servers were switched off, we'd still have a game to play. I backed for single player offline, as the previous games were... guess what! Single player offline!
Now. By happy circumstance I've not found multiplayer all too problematic, well p2p shenanigans and lack of transponder settings *HINT HINT - another thing promised but not yet delivered!* aside, but that still doesn't alter the fact that I backed a SP game I could use offline. I'm not going to ask for a refund (even if that were legally possible) as I've had over 10,000 minutes of fun since Alpha 4 alone, so feel free to view this post as irrelevant or even churlish, but it still leaves a bitter taste of 'this isn't what I was expecting'.

I'm very chilled out, lol. But I made my point and the apologist army is out in full force, so I'm going back to eating pop-corn while you guys drink the cool-aid.

For many years now I have heard Americans talk of Cool-Aid - what the heck is it? It sounds like something you would get from a fridge in Boots the Chemist.

How about use who purchased ED after KS from their site? Didn't they call it Pre-Purchase?

As is your choice.

I'd be annoyed if I were you too but you're going too far.

Besides, Mr Braben is a figurehead...nothing more.

Okay, so you have no evidence that they didn't *try* to do fully offline. Thank you.

I'm just taking issue with the implication that Frontier lied to us. I don't believe that for a second.

Atinus, fully offline is possible. David himself has done it three times before already. The notion that it's not possible is just ludicrous.

What happened seems to be that they went all out for online, and designed the game that way.

The ability to take their technical solutions offline was not in their minds when they made their decisions... they (wrongly) assumed everyone would be fine with MP.

We're not.

Hell, the only reason I've tolerated their flaky "multiplayer" & defended them to the hilt up till now has been the thought that an offline mode was coming.

It was promised during the Kickstarter. It's an absolutely core tenet of the game that people pledged large sums of money for... the ability to take a boxed copy of Elite: Dangerous, load it up on a computer, and play. No internet required.

Whether it was a deliberate lie, or an oversight, or an error on their part, the fact remains: Frontier have screwed up big time.

.. Servers required ...

As mentioned in the newsletter thread the game has changed a lot since the initial kickstarter. One of the biggest changes is the importance of the the offline component to manage the galaxy and interactions. This isn't something we can translate into an offline experience as we'd effectively have to make a new game world - we couldn't share the same world and that throws out the intent for a shared universe.

I'm not sure I buy and/or fully understand this. If the galaxy is as large as it is claimed to be, and players either solo, grouped or not are spread all over it thinly then I really dont see the issue with syncing.
If people are in the same instance, then they get synced, If the sync data doesn't match then dont put them in the same instance, and if they are on their own - who cares. This isn't EVE.

I'm not especially happy that offline-solo appears to be gone.. No disrespect to commanders here - but it has been my observation that online games are full of people that hide behind their screens and behave in a manner that they would not if they were standing in front of you. Having said that I do enjoy playing online games every now and again with a group of people I know (like my boys) - so ED seemed to have it all up until a few hours ago ..

my $0.02.

Again.. I don´t worry that FD shutdown the server...they want you the Multiplayer as Cashcow ....
And now I don´t want a refund, I have nice 3200 Minutes off playing ....
And Yes I am screwed because I now can´t play....but you also loose, because especially all of the Multiplayer shout for CONTENT and Depth, and you didn´t get it, so you will be disapointed and jump to the next Game.
And FD lost the Single Offline Player ... so who will play this wonderfull Galaxy ??? In the next year many, but in 2 Year all be in Star Citizen MULTIPLAYER. (me not...;)...)

It's not just a kick starter issue. I bought the game in late September this year from the store on the website - which stated in black and white that it would be available in off-line single player.

Same here. Given how terrible the game is, latency-wise, this was the only light at the end of the tunnel, for me.
