  • In the interest of covering the widest possible range, configs that retain image detail, but completely the tint the image the same as the HUD colour are acceptable
  • Orange is also acceptable (as long as it's modified in some way from the default)
  • Crucially, we're trying to avoid moderate-to-excessive colour-banding/clipping/loss of detail, while preserving as many of the original hues as possible

Nice idea. Suggestions: have the images in spoiler tags to make it easier to cycle through them, and how about some screenshots of the HUD as well? Sure we could stick the values into Arkku's website, but having them side by side to contrast might be helpful too.

I once saw an interesting HUD in an IClipper, white with blue shield rings and throttle sweet spot. I dont know if red/green came out clearly, but I doubt it. Can anyone reproduce?
 
I run a white HUD and the portrait colors look to be real good. Friendlies are blue, neutrals are white, enemies are yellow (flashy yellow when attacking).

Added sections for each part of the hue spectrum to make it a bit easier to browse. Also to note, if you have a working config but no screenshots, please still share it!

why can't frontier just give us hud color customizer? did somebody up the programming or what?
I believe the current implementation was an afterthought. The UI gets passed through a colour transform matrix before it gets displayed (if that makes any sense to you). It worked reasonably well up until 2.1. The fix they added in beta 5 attempts to pre-invert the colours before the transform is run, but depending on the values you have, that can just result in even worse outcomes.

The portraits seem to work as intended, so long as you ensure that each line and column for the colour values matrix add up to 1.0, or close to 1.0. Mine add up to 0.85.
Yeah that sounds about right. It gives me an idea for a new version of Arkku's HUD changer but with 3 triangles for the colour selections. The points on each triangle representing R G B. The more you move toward one colour, the less of the other two you get. I'll look into it, but my expertise is more in the design than the implementation.

I actually like the orange for some ships, but it is nice to be able to change it when you get bored, or if you have for example, a Python, where all its display screens on the bridge are clearly blue, not orange. So I have been using this color scheme which I color-matched to the Python's systems, and it seems to work fine with the portaits. It's a slightly different blue to the other blues I have seen around, and I personally prefer it. It's more vivid. Anyway, here it is:

Mine is pretty similar to Apollo's, but lighter. Blue with white accents that have a slight golden hue sometimes. I had also done mine to match the Python's blue, but ran into a few issues with going darker, so I went this particular blue. These screenshots are kinda random, as I'm not around my gaming computer to take better shots - if you accept these RGB values I'll edit my post with better screenshots for you (menus and what not - they work absolutely fine post 1.6/2.1).

** Updated screenshots. No tinting to NPC faces, and should note that it also matches or comes close to the blue display color within the Anaconda and Cobra MKIII, as well as the Python. You can see that via the screenshots below.

I'm pretty happy with mine - primarily a turquoise-cyan blue, green stays green, prominent yellow text.
Most significant indicators (e.g the speed 'blue zone') become red (oversaturated but I think I need to turn down some other setting that is hidden now - bloom?)

The Cyan and first Blues code in the OP use the exact same code. The code for the first Blues is wrong.

Very nice! The NPC in the pic looks like an acceptable level of tintage. Would you be able to provide some more examples of the NPCs? Otherwise I'll check it out, time permitting.

Good catch. The correct value has been added. The one you pasted is Garrus', which is similar, but not quite the same.
