"Oh my Gawd! The Norwegian Army is after us in tanks. We should shoot out their 3D cameras!"

"Wait a moment what operating system are they using?"

The tanks trundle to a halt.

"It's okay lads. They're using Windows 8."

The defense budget is like virtual reality as well. In actual reality they would not last long. So it is proper irony that they turn to alternate methods of viewing the world. For only then will it look a bit better. ;)

Wouldn't you feel exposed with a full 360 view of the world without your tank between you and the enemy?

Cartoons of Norwegian tank crews training on a nudist beach spring to mind...
"Right men turrets up we have to get used to the feelings of exposure when using our new VR systems."

The Beta Oculus Rift Discussion and Support thread.

Hi folks, to help keep things tidy we will merge any discussion on the O/R here in the beta forums.

We have 2 other O/R threads on the forum, one in the General section and one in the Hardware section

Oculus advice... Performance

Hi guys

I am running the DK1 on an MSI laptop (i7, 32gb ram and a GTX 780m)...
I'm finding things get a little stuttery in certain areas where the graphics demands are higher, like ringed planets and inside the asteroid belt...

It was suggested to me that the 780 m just isn't powerful enough to cope with this game and I would like to know if that is true? If so then presumably the DK2 will be even worse?

Don't get me wrong, things are very playable most of the time and tweaking graphics setting helps too...

But if the oculus demands are that high, then it will be quite a niche market (at least initially) will it not?

Thanks

From what I have read over the Internet OR is quite demanding in terms of GPU requirements and stable frame rate.

----------------------------------------------
Here are the requirements for OR (https://support.oculusvr.com/hc/en-us/articles/201835987-Oculus-Rift-Development-Kit-2-FAQ):

Q: What are the minimum requirements and recommended specifications for the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2?

A: Minimum requirements: A computer running a Windows 7 or higher, Mac OS 10.8 or higher, or Ubuntu 12.04 LTS operating system, 2 USB ports (at least one powered), and a DVI-D or HDMI graphics output.

Recommended specifications: A desktop computer running a dedicated graphics card with DVI-D or HDMI graphics output, with capability of running current generation 3D games at 1080p resolution at 75fps or higher.
----------------------------------------------

As you can see you GPU should provide 75+fps.
Take into account that ED is not optimized yet, and the frame rate might be improved. It is a known issue that ringed planets have significant impact on the performance.

Ringed planets have their own specific bug somewhere in the game, that make *all* devices regardless of spec to suffer periodic framedrops.

Also, the stations aren't really optimized, afaik, so framerate does drop significantly in them. But in general, a 780m should be enough to run this game well.

The question is whether 780m will be enough for OR?

To run at 1080p at a minimum of 75fps? Simple answer is no. Oculus Rift requires a decent amount of grunt... you can always try turning all the graphics quality settings down low of course. And with optimisations as game goes to general release it might be enough.

CV1 will probably be 1440p and 95fps so I suspect laptops are completely out for that!

That's exactly what I have meant. One thing is to run the game well, the other one is to provide decent performance for OR experience.

Its really hard to know at this point.

Not only is the game buggy and not optimised but the graphics are still increasing with each release....and we don't really know how DK2 will perform.

I built a huge beastly machine that generally runs everything maxed out and it averages 110-120+most times. ....though it can still drop around 70+ sometimes at some points (like planet rings) ...will this be improved or could I actually see stutter at some points? I hope not !

and this was exactly the logic i used to get a DK2. by the time i have a pc capable of doing a CV1 justice, either it will be much cheaper or CV2/3 will be out.

my money is on a 780ti minimum being needed to run ED full bubble on 75hz dk2 rift mode.

if it turns out it is a little easier on the requirements then so much the better..... but a brand new aaa game with 1080p 3D with 75fps minimum.... that is a big ask imo.

Me too I didn't KS DK1 as 720 DK2 will just require an updated GPU (the price will come down) and I deliberately choose a cheap GPU for my current build.

Thanks for this guys...
I figure things may well improve improve once the game is optimised but I am really thinking in terms of DK2...

I think I have to accept that for the experience I am looking for it will have to be a desktop...
I was also looking at the 780 ti as a starting point...
:D

Btw... I tried playing for a while without the oculus last night and the difference in enjoyment and experience is so massive that its scary!

I am just too used to actually sitting inside my ship now, that anything else just feels silly! Maybe trackIR might be a happy compromise for times when I need a VR break?

Nah, stick with VR and just buy a bigger PC! :D That's what I'll be doing - buying whatever PC it takes to get the best VR experience. Hoping my current PC will see my through DK2 but definitely building a new rig for CV1.

I have a i5 2500k and GTX 780, and using the Rift inside stations and within rings I sometimes have stutter. I think this is just because the game isn't optimised yet.

That said without the Rift, I get a constant 60fps with V-Sync on.

Oculus Rift - Drifting / Orientation Issues

I've been having a lot of trouble with my Rift on Elite. With all other games / demos, my Rift works perfectly however with Elite I have the following problem.

When sat still inside the station it is fine. But as soon as I star flying the Rift drifts to either the right or the left. I can reorientate it with the hotkey, but it will drift again within a few minutes.

It is even worse in supercruise and hyperspace. It will drift at least 10 to 20 degree, over a 5 minute or less period.

I have reconfigured the Rift using the SDK, but that hasn't helped.

Any suggestions?

Gamma / Brightness on Oculus Rift

I've noticed that on the Rift, the colours are a bit pasty, as though the brightness is too high.

I used to have this problem in Alpha 1.1 when the Rift was set to a resolution of 1920x1080. However the colours were much richer when set to 1920x1200.

Does anyone else have this issue?
