Non-violent heist: stunning still counts toward failure.

In some layouts there literally impossible to turn off alarm without at least stunning local NPCs with charger tool. Without turning off alarm it's impossible "quietly" opening sample containment unit.
So, "Do not critically injure NPCs" should count only towards killing them. Stunning is stunning, it's just knocks them out.

To be honest, bearing in mind we (players) are only "knocked unconcious" by lethal damage, teh same should technically be true for NPCs. I mean, the names all end up being the same, so... ;)

There does seem to be a lack of "nonlethal" alternatives, given the number of quests that require it. About all you can do in some situations is abuse the game mechanic mulligan where NPCs just complain at you the first time they catch you in a restricted area. I did have an instance early on where I, uh, accidentally forgot which button I had "grenade" bound to, and while it didn't hit anyone I was interested to see that the guards went to investigate it but didn't aggro on me directly, so I need to remember to play with that next time I get the "1 room power building with 2 NPCs and 100% restricted area" layout.

Overload on a non-shielded NPC is fatal, unfortunately. It's a pity you can release at a given percentage for a lesser charge, and then at least there'd be skill in picking the right charge level - enough to incapacitate but not enough to kill.

With the power-pistol-chargy-thingy? AFAIK, that kills them!
oh but it isn't...

Tip:

Scan them with the regular profile scanner first.

I have had quite a few lvl 2/3 people that I needed out of the way for various things that had bounties. If they do, then you're in the clear to zap their asses.
