North african or south african crested porcupine?

I wonder how many people who voted "african crested porcupine" or just "crested porcupine" realize they actually voted specifically for "north african crested porcupine" and not the species more common in sub saharan savannah regions of africa which is called "cape porcupine" or "south african crested porcupine" even though it ranges all the way from east to south africa?

I mean its fine if you want the species from north africa and italy, but if you are thinking south african and voting the other without knowing, it can cause issues with results of wish lists.

Even zoos sometimes mislabel these porcupines as "african crested porcupine" and then add correct latin name for south african.

and then we have "indian crested porcupine", you can say in this thread your prefer them too.. for instance i prefer cape and indian over north african because they are more common in zoos worldwide in total. some regions have more indian, others cape, i don't think north african is no.1 anywhere.

The zoo near me that has porcupines was extra silly for a while and had a sign with both the common and latin name of the (north) African crested porcupine - they have Cape porcupines lol. Thankfully they corrected it recently.

Personally I want the Cape porcupine - from what I've heard they're the most commonly kept crested porcupine in North America, the UK and New Zealand, and they're the only ones kept here in Australia. However, as I've said before, they're all so similar that I really don't mind.

I just want the biggest species, the one with the longest quills and the one that kills lions with infection (hahaha, take that overused cats)

but I associate porcupines with Africa, so...any african I guess.
that's exactly why i prefer south african over north
most of north african crested porcupine range is around mediterannean basin and italy or algeria is not what i think of when i think africa
@FlameWizard492's response proves my point that the no.1 porcupine in meta list is probably there because many people don't know the differences while they want a proper african porcupine and ending up voting specifically for the animal they actually dont want

the more responses we get the better
so devs can see what we think as a community about crested porcupines and help them read what the meta wishlist actually says without bias

tell us what you think guys!

I add myself to what seems to be the dominant group of people who don't care much about the species of crested porcupine. With the exception of the Sunda porcupine, the Hystrix species are visually identical, all are apparently kept in zoos and their habitats are quite similar too.

See the appearance doesn't matter to me in the slightest. I can't knowingly put an Indian porcupine in my African kopje exihibit mixed with meerkats. Because it doesn't belong there.

I want the Cape for that reason. The African crested I would accept because at least it's from Africa.
