Teignmouth Electron.... really F.D?

Have come across this NPC name several times and find it in very poor taste.

Raise the bar a little hey.

IIRC a ton of the NPC names were backer-submitted so at most FDev is guilty of not getting the reference - which seems quite likely - and/or not filtering.

If you think that is bad taste, then prepare to be hideously offended the more you play the game ... if you are a slightly overweight fella, then you may even be offended when you get lucky enough to meet "Fat Bloke" ...?!

The Hat :)

So, a search reveals that this was the name of a vessel which a man committed suicide aboard while at sea. It's a sad story, but I don't see anything offensive about NPC ships bearing the names of real world vessels which have been involved in fatal incidents. I'm pretty sure I've also seen a Titanic, and the names of various historical warships.

If anything, it should be taken as a commemoration. Which I would put money on being the intent of the backer who submitted this one.

An interesting story nevertheless...

Albeit tragic, I hadn't been aware of it previous to reading this thread.

In some respects using the name puts the sad story to everyone's perceptions and now we all know about it.... I don't see that as disrespectful at all; in memoriam.

Additionally anyone who decides to do a round the world race where they are spending months alone at sea probably should be psychologically stable; unfortunately that poor sailor wasn't as far as the accounts go; RIP.

We will see him out in the black......

In memorial I can accept, and in a strange way , the name living on in the stars sheds a different light on this.

He was a friend, and the sadness shall never pass.

To come across it was quite confronting for me at the time, I had to just walk away.

The black dog hunts us all, even under the bluest of skies.

Indeed, stations have been named for people who have passed in memoriam, why not this one
