Not impressed at all with the CV1 resolution (I haven't got one, going on the specs)

I find it quite hilarious that many posters on various websites are saying the Rift is dead on arrival, costs 2x too much, is months behind, and that VR is terribad, but in the same post saying "I'm definately getting the Vive!". I can't understand how they think that the Vive will be substantially cheaper, will ship before April, or that the VR experience will be any better than the Rift given we know that SDE is worse on the Vive (not to mention the freznels). If VR is dead, surely they should bemoan any VR device, rather than berating one and committing to the other (of which there's no information on at all unless you've been to CES).

Even if they're one of these strange people who thinks that as soon as you put on a Rift, Zuckerberg is going to personally suck your soul out through your eyeballs, there's no rationale behind it.

Odd.

All though I *could* just rush out and buy either, I will probably wait until next Xmas to see which wins the performance war in the real world.

You just have to remember the fact that most people are really stupid.

A sensible plan. Not something you see in any of the forums around the place discussing VR! :)

Screw sensible plans ;)

For me the DK2 was my gateway drug. I agree the sentiment is sound wait and back the winner but personally I have been without the rift for barely more than a month and I already need my vr fix ;)

On the DK2, the Vive or Rift will need to be substantially better than the DK2 for me to upgrade. The DK2 is pretty good as it is. The release Rift is touted to have much better technology, but unless this translates into a substantially better VR experience than the DK2, I'll be happy to remain with my DK2 for a while longer yet.

Truth is had I not sold my rift last month I think I would have done the same. Still after fees I cleared nearly 250 quid and I would have bought eve v and Lucky's tale in all likelihood. Whilst I do not need an xb1 pad..... It is a fine pad and a good upgrade to my 360 pad

You're not impressed with a device you haven't tried compared to another, you presumably also haven't tried. I'd say that's rather a snap judgement.

I've owned a DK2 for a year and played many hours of Elite with it. I also tried a Vive several times at last year's EGX. The resolution is much better than the DK2 with zero visible pixel spacing (what the American's call screen door effect). You can SEE pixels, it's rather like running in 1280x1024 on a 1080p monitor. However, resolution is not the whole picture, as anyone who has used a "proper" 4MP camera Vs a 5MP camera phone, will tell you.

You have to remember the screen real estate in front of each eye is very small. Even 4K phone screens lack the dpi for high resolutions in such a tiny area; imagine a headset with a massive bulbous screen-housing with two four inch screens? Heavy and unworkable.

Both the Vive and the CV1 are the same resolution (2160x1200), they both refresh at 90Hz instead of the DK2's 75Hz. This means far less latency.

To display two 1080x1200 screens at a minimum 90fps with any kind of detail takes a lot of grunt (a GTX 970 minimum), so the small increase in resolution is only doing what is possible and practical within the current limits of technology.

The weight of the headset is a major factor. Unless you enjoy neck pain, which is why I've pre-ordered the CV1.

If you try a VR device and find you don't get anything from the experience, fair enough. Don't buy one. But to write it off on the basis of a pretty poor 2D simulation in a web-browser? That's like saying a song you've never heard is bad because you read the first word of the written lyric.

As a DK2 owner I can say, all that web app does, is badly simulate pixel resolution and not much else. Get a Google cardboard, load a VR app and you've got a 25-30% simulation of what a real VR headset it like.

Epic necro bro. That's all been mentioned in the thread and I did change my opinion and have ordered one. Mind you I did find your further clarity and analogies helpful and am now even more excited.

Now let's let this sleeping dog lie

If there's more to be said on a subject, especially in the light of new information, then why shouldn't a thread be appended? I enjoyed the latest post.

Wait, you're saying we shouldn't make new threads every time we want to discuss a topic again? :D

Just for reference, on one page alone the "Vive Discussion Thread" multiple times went a full month without new posts, before being "necro'd" (at the request of the mods, I might add ;) ).

Anyways, back on topic, anyone heard timelines for in-store demos of the consumer Rift/Vive?

Was speaking as op, not as mod. Should have made it clear. Its a necro because I've already been pursuaded

Should moderators be posting their opinion on upcoming hardware, which could influence future sales of the product they should be supporting?

For the record, my raspberry pi-driven screen is totally on par with dk1, although I didn't get the FOV right and don't know if I can get the right monitor.

But yea, I'm even more excited to get my gyro now. :D

Mods are people too... well, most of them. ;) They are not Frontier employees, but volunteers, perhaps that the bit of the picture you're missing. They moderate the forum, rather than "support the product".

Definetly as they are even the bigger fans to this game then probably we are. They are not Frontier employees and doing this just out of passion to this game and the community. As we normalos can poiop whatever we want in the forum, their name and reputation as moderator is always on the line. So any comment or thread a mod is writing, I read it very carefully and with respect to them.

ok it has already been said that mods are not employees however i would like to take this 1 step further. Personally I have no issue (even would embrace) FD giving their thoughts.
if FD came out and said, actually guys, we have got a CV1 and a vive and you know what.... CV1 is nice and all but VIVE NAILS it and the rift will be taking a back seat..

end of the day ED is Frontiers baby and if they wanted to endorse 1 product over an other I would be fine with it (though IF any money hypothetically changed hands then that is a whole new issue, and separate from the devs just giving their honest unbiased thoughts)

I do have an Oculus CV1 and the resolution and detail are truly impressive. Just so the OP knows.

It's like being there.

The Vive I tried at EGX was good, but the CV1 is lighter and more comfortable.

I've been able to use it with contact lenses and spectacles.

Want to try? See you at LaveCon!

i wish my specs fit in it.
Normally I use contacts so its not a disaster but there are times when i cant wear them, and that means i cant game in vr.

I am a bit sour about it given when I ordered it was stated the rift would come with an extra faceplate included for FREE which would accomadate glasses.

I would understand if they were massive "Dennis Taylors" but they are not.
