Horizons Not played in a while, anything I need to know?

Heya Everyone, CMDR Squesh here.

I had to stop playing about a month after Horizon's dropped. I know that the engineers have been released now but are there any changes to gameplay/navigation/missions that I need to be aware before jumping back in?

Also, have they made it easier to jump in with Friends (as I vaguely remember it being a pain)

Cheers, Squesh

The AI is nasty and you will suffer from a lot of interdiction's if you are carrying cargo, strongly suggest you use a cheaply replaceable ship for a while before taking out anything that you don't want to lose.

Thanks Morgan,

I remember the AI being really annoying with interdictions when I last played (was a reason I stopped playing after loosing a lot of cargo to an NPC).

I think I've got a reasonable balance but will be cautious.

A lot has changed.
You would do well to read the patch notes.

Engineers. You can mod your ship now. There is a randomness to it. There is a requirement to gather or do certain things to accomplish these mods.

AI. It all depends if you were an ace at the 'fish in a barrel' game. The AI aren't near as dumb and willing to die. Please do not take your biggest, most expensive ship out there. Don't jump back in thinking you will lay waste to all before you, regardless of the rank. You may get surprised. Make sure you know how to use your Pips.

USS's are different now. Better, I think.

Scan everything. Wakes, ships, NAV beacons...

Missions are different. I find they pay better. I 'm actually running them now.

I for one, like the changes. Some don't. Just know that a few things changed and as a result, you may need to change the way you play. I did and it's been great.

Come back and tell us what you think.

Heh, what he said.

Engineers are pretty much a huge waste of time, but everything else in 2.1 is cool. :)

AI can be nasty, but that's relative to your skill. I've still yet to find a decent challenge.
Others are being slain left right and centre. Lol

Grab a sidewinder, rush into the nearest LoRES and practice dog-fighting until your fingers bleed. Throttle management, PIP management, tactics, flight mechanics .. learn to fly properly, or the AI is going to dance circles around you. Once you've got dog-fighting down, they're much easier to fight, but be VERY careful.. look at their ranks, do not attack higher ranked (3+) NPC's without assistance (SysSec Vessels are your new best friends).

Thanks All,

I was (at least I thought) fairly competent at dog fighting. Had a Vulture for bounty hunting and could pretty much take on anything but will bear in mind that the AI isnt as stupid as it once was.

I'll take Zhon's advice and take a Sidewinder into a LoRes area and see if I've still got it ;)

As above plus
If you are in a bigger ship, or even a smallish ship fit point defence. Missiles now do insane damage to external modules like thrusters, weapons and other stuff. If your shields go down and they have missiles you are usually in for a world of hurt!

A quick glance through the latest threads on here should tell you all you need to know. ;) Check the Engineers discussion area too.

They finally made Missiles useful??!! Or is this just when NPC's are using them?

Works for you too if you can use them effectively once the enemies shields are down. They still don't deal massive damage but getting even a few successful hits will stop some enemy weapons firing or even disable their thrusters making it a much easier fight.

No more shieldless stripped down paper-thin trader ships loaded to the gills with cargo racks either. Defnitely build your ships out more properly. Shield boosters, at least one point defense, chaff if you have slots. Missiles and torps are more effective, as are mines. A defensive trade ship loaded to the gills with mine launchers is a viable tactic. Run and spam mines until you can jump. The enemy won't sit an spin while you shoot at them either. ;P

My opinion is mixed at this point. I like the tougher enemies, but balance still seems way off in certain cases. Today's patch supposedly tries to remedy some balance issues. For the most part I can get by just fine but occasionally you'll get ganked and blasted out of the sky within seconds and stare at the screen saying "what!?". If you want to minimize interdictions.. fly around without cargo when going from point to point. If you have active missions, expect to be interdicted. A lot. If you carry cargo. Same goes, but maybe just a bit less so. I'm iffy on the Engineers bits. It seems more like a way to keep players busy who already A-spec'd their ship and want to find something else to do. Basically glorified Fed-Ex missions. Get this or that, bring back, make the boss happy, get a module bonus which has a degree of randomness to it.. which could backfire when you upgrade. I absolutely DO like the updated mission system though. Its far better than before. Payouts and rewards feel like they are improved and more worthwhile. Still bugs here and there, but overall better.

You don't need to focus hardcore on doing things for the engineers either. Just going about your business you'll eventually gather the stuff you need for them for the most part. scan wakes for data. scan data points. gather materials from planets, USS, and what not are dropped from ships you pop. The sheer number of materials will throw you for a loop in the beginning. But if you target/scan a material, it seems to tell you in its description... and will state if it is considered rare. But maybe no for everything (?). collector limpets are super useful in such cases as drops often have a limited life before they disappear. Plus its a pain to scoop a lot of small materials in larger ships. I hate material scooping in my anaconda..but its perfectly fine in the cobra.

Oh. Also exploration data and in certain cases bounties can be used as a supplement to buff up an engineer's reputation when sold at the engineer's base. This ups your rep with them, which you can then open higher ranked upgrades at. The primary way... you just gather their materials and build upgrades, and get reputation that way. The new patch is suppose to allow you to sell reputation points, if you wish, to get a guaranteed module upgrade special bonus. Or you can just leave it to RNGesus (the random number generator) to determine if you get a special buff or not (supposedly around 5% chance per attempt or something I think)

All in all. Fly safe. Fly defensive. Most importantly, don't get too comfortable. Its even more Dangerous out there now. ;P
