Not really feeling 2.1's new weapons...

Ever tried to recharge a non-rechargable battery? :)

The implausibility isn't in transmitting the energy, it's the fact that it's magically received and routed. IMO, healing lasers should at least require a "recharge" utility module that's targeted by the beam.

I generally like the other weapons aside from the healbeams though, although I do worry that FDev isn't fully taking into account how much players will hategrind to get a "'best in slot", even if it's rare and random, and effect the overall state of the game.

They're all items that are awesome given a single player game, but seem so ripe for abuse when you consider they will eventually wind up in the hands of organized wings out to cause pointless misery for others.

Yes, very much so as well.

Ever tried to generate a shield that deflects energy regardless of the type, source or magnitude?

You're late. :)

Drunk people are always late. Too late to even edit in a ninja. So the thread can have a samurai instead:

Most of the new weapons are cool, some are meh, but the feeling nagging at the back of my head is... did we really need these in the game? They're the focus of the upcoming patch, yet somehow I'm more excited about ice ring mining, small ship thursters upgrade, bookmakrs, tower communications and hopefully, new missions. It seems to me that someone arbitrarily decided that this game needs crafting, so we have to have engineers and their contraptions. I don't remember talk about engineers in the DDA, yet there are lots of features there which I'm still waiting on, and hoping that they will make it into the game.

Have to agree with you Weps - that is exactly how I feel. BUT - I am a solo player and I expect that a lot of the benefits in the weapons area will be most effective in the wings, that is, the MMO aspect of the game. I recall that the MMO aspect is one of the areas of constant criticism so it is no surprise really that some effort has been put in here.

I'm just happy overall about the direction the game is going.

I've no doubt this makes me boring, but as far as weapon mods go, I would have been happier with engineers doing things like increasing the cyclic rate on your minigun, making your cannon reload faster, or improving the cooling of your beam laser.

The ones we have are more "creative" sure, but... eh. /shrug

We'll see how it plays out. Maybe the more boring ones that I want are planned too, but they didn't think anyone was lame enough to be interested in 'em. :D

I want those upgrades in addition to what we get. Those are needed severely. For Godsake I can fire a hand gun faster than that so called MINIGUN.

For all the realism being spouted about in this thread a MINIGUN with a slower fire rate than an mp5 in a dog fighting scenario is ridiculous. Same with the ammo capacity. No realistic weapons designer would dare let this excuse for a dog fighting weapon get out of the factory.

I'm willing to accept that some special frequency of radiation incident on a shield will strengthen it. After all EvE has got remote shield boosting and if it's good for EvE it's good for Elite, right? right?

Anyway, would it be too outlandish to think that there may be another special frequency that renders a shield ineffective? This frequency of course we hope no-one would discover. Since we're getting all Star Trek here.

If we are to tolerate such an imposition as healbeams, I suggest we should also get shield-hacking modules, that after a time determine a target shield's vulnerable frequency and allow weapons to pass clean through it.

The weapon I have the most issue with right now is the Feedback Cascade one, not for the player vs player aspect but the player vs ai part. The AI are currently incredibly good shots with fixed weapons as is and with the bump they're getting in 2.1 I'm worried about a very real possibility that they'll just so happen to be able to hit you with a feedback cascade everytime you pop a SCB basically making SCBs useless in combat unless your an AI. I really hope they change it to letting that single shot go through the shield for raw hull damage or that it just does a bit of bonus damage to the shield if an SCB is activated when it hits the shield. I think completely killing the targets shield is just a tad bit overboard.

Besides the point that "Shield Healing Lasers" isn't a very science-y idea ... what do you think would be the immediate subsequent invention ?
A Wide Spectrum Energy Eating Shield :p Could have 1 MW, as it would only need to eat the very first glimpse, adjust itself and make your Huge Beamlaser a secondary powersource for its own lasers ;)

Also, it simply sounds wrong to me. I extremely dislike this idea. A multi-laser-powered weapon on the other hand ... I could get behind [squeeeee]

Like species 8472 from Star Trek Voyager

latest

Although we would need some proper justification for implementing such Über-weapons ... Destructible stations / Flagships anyone ??
