Not terribly excited for the expansion really

Why do I need a base? Why would I want to protect it? What if I do not want to be forced into PvP combat on a daily basis, will I lose my base? Will I be at a disadvantage by choosing not to have one?
...
You are trying, from my perspective at least, to force people to pew pew or more specifically to PvP.
Actually that's not it at all. Taking Eve again as an example out of convenience. Most players by number in eve don't PvP much or even at all, I mean really lets be honest the combat system in Eve sucks. Many people are quite content pve'ing, building things, or playing the market. My previous post might suggest I was big into pvp, I wasn't, I had some fun pvp experiences, but the vast majority of my time was spent doing pve and trading. Most people don't own stations or starbases, these things tend to be owned and run by groups of people, not one alone. These are systems designed to bring people together and create those player to player experiences. Even if all you do all day is mine and not be part of any of that, you know that those resources you mine are then bought and used by other real people for real reasons. That adds to everyone's experience, and that's really the point.

You do realize that there's nowhere near enough players for a wholly player-driven economy with no NPC / BGS goods right? You know, given the sheer size of the play area, the number of markets spread throughout that area? The number of players we have cannot possibly cover all of them in any meaningful way without BGS economies.
The interesting thing about that is that the economy needs to be no larger than the player base that exists. If supply is sufficiently less than the demand prices will naturally rise and increase the incentive for people to build those goods, or mine needed resources. Natural market hubs will form with other goods scattered around. The market interface would of course need to allow players to find these goods easily, instead of having to dock at each one searching, as is the case now.

OP, I totally get where you're coming from. Problem is, that's really not what they're doing here. ED is really about you interacting with NPCs mostly. The expansion really, well, expands on that, adding all sorts of new types of missions that are really mostly a PvE and coop thing.

The main issue here is the instance player limit, which is just too low to really do meaningful large-scale PvP stuff. There's a link in my signature for a suggestion on how this could be changed. I'm not saying ED shouldn't go for player factions, player owned stations and such stuff - but I believe this requires the ability to have more than 24 people in an instance before we even think about these other things.

I certainly agree that the netcode would need to be substantially improved. However it's not necessary or frankly even desirable for battles to get as large as eve's do. There may be some people here that have experienced those "legendary" enormous battles between thousands in eve, they are horrible, nobody likes them. Before time dilation in eve you would be lucky if the node you were in didn't straight up crash, if the battle did take place many people would just be staring at a black screen for 30 mins and then be dead when the game unfroze, it was horrible. Today with time dilation the game will at least work, but it can be so slow that battles could take all day with you making tea between shots. And no none of this is an exaggeration, it really can be that bad.

The large scale pvp approach is certainly not what we want with Elite. You could never have super huge battles with elite's combat system, just like fps's tend not to be able to exceed 100 players, this is true with elite as well. Instead I imagine some kind of more structured large scale combat system, where a section of contested space is cut up into an instanced "game board", where fleet commanders might be able to select who in their fleet fights where on the board, I'm only thinking vaugely how this would work, but I think interesting game-play could be built around the need for instancing.

As for PvE, I think it's great Elite has moderately good PvE, and I don't think adding a strong multiplayer element does anything but enhance that side of the game.

Well Elite is designed to do the exact opposite. You don't feel like you have to play all the time and any time you don't play is wasted.
But you're basically saying that Elite will never include content that makes the game fun for some of those other people, because the people currently playing it will suddenly feel that they have to participate and play with the new content. But they don't. The game Universe is so big that nothing need be taken away from those who do not want to form guilds, build space stations, and go into battle with each other. Additional content for the serious gamers will not take away from Power Play, or Mining, or Exploring, or Trading, or Bounty Hunting, or anything else.

... a player driven economy... forces you to play. The game should be perfectly playable in solo or even if there is not a single soul but you playing in open.
Lack of player originated goods has never been an issue with any mmo that has had them. Generally it's harder to create adequate sinks to prevent rampant inflation. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mudflation . So don't worry about that, if you don't want to involve yourself in production or trading, you certainly wouldn't have to.

Flying your spaceship is and should always be the thing to do in the game. Everything else is and should always be something to do.
Completely agreed. The entire purpose of the "everything else" is to enhance the meaning and interesting interactions that one can have in the cockpit.

Then don't join a guild which creates player bases and goes to war with other guilds. You can continue to do everything the game currently offers.
You see, it is not as simple as just letting everyone have bases.
Yes it is.
