Newcomer / Intro Notable signals

Hi folks,

So I've scanned a planet (with the FSS) and have found 7 signals detected (3 human, 3 geological and 1 biological.)

Can I find out what/where these are? Do I need to land with the SRV or disembark on foot. I am very confused as once again, the game does not explain anything!

Yes..

Three different kind og Geo signals. Being lava sprouts, geysers etc
Three human things. Being bases
One bio thing; likely a living plant like entity

Human signals (if they are on the planet) will show in your nav panel when you are in range (I can't remember the range), they also show as navigation markers (the circles) when in range - human signals can also be fleet carriers in orbit I think.

Geo and bio are not shown as locations, just an overlay showing where they could be found (as @aRJay says) - you can change what the overlay is showing by selecting the type in the DSS screen - I don't know the default binds for selecting next / back in that.

To be honest, I can't be bothered with all the hassle...!

I've seen videos where the objects are shown in the HUD but these must be old as it seems to have been altered for the worse.

Always check the dates of creation and editing on videos and other guides as things can and do change.
The change to produce the overlays which show biologicals as areas rather than POI locations will have happened in 2021 with the release of Odyssey.

The change is deeper than the display, how the Geo and Bio targets are located on/generated by the planet has changed as has how the planets are produced.

As have been said, you will get the best results if you scan the planet with a Detailed Surface Scanner first.
  • Human signals: settlements on the surface, as well as stations and fleet carriers in orbit. They will show up in your Nav Panel when you're close enough, even on an unscanned planet. They will also show up as circles in your HUD. The associated number refers to all sites in total – so if a planet has 3 settlements, 1 surface starport, 1 coriolis station and 1 outpost in orbit, it will have "6 human signals".

  • Geological signals: stuff like geysers, gas vents, fumaroles etc. on the surface. The associated number does not refer to the total number of geological sites found on the planet. Instead, it refers to the number of different geological phenomena that can be found on the planet. Example: if a planet has a lot of iron magma lava spouts and a few gas vents, it will have "2 geological signals". You can find and collect raw materials (with a SRV) around geological sites. See also the ED Wiki.

  • Biological signals: Just like geological signals, but for simple alien lifeforms like plants, bacteria, and fungi. Similarly, if a planet is home to 1 species of Cactoida, 1 species of Frutexa, 1 species of Tussock and 1 species of Osseus, this planet will feature "4 biological signals". The particular plants will grow in a lot of different places on the surface though, not just in 4 distinct spots. If you scan those plants with a Genetic Sampler on foot, you can earn a lot of money.

Sorry Lhorndra, but I still do not understand. I scanned the planet with the probes and got a 100% full scan.

This is when I got the 7 signals detected (3 human, 3 geological and 1 biological) detected.

I do not know how to take this further in order to find out where they actually are.
They do not appear in the Nav Panel as I assume I'm not close enough to detect them.

I am legit confused and frustrated! I did try the FSS but kept getting an adaptive zoom blocked message...

I do not understand what I'm supposed to do.

The adaptive zoom blocked message just means there is something in the way when using the FSS - a star or a planet. (You can also get a "too close" warning.)

A quick peek a the youtube shows lots of recent DSS guides (less than 2 years)... try this one for example (not mine):

The geological and biological will not show on the Nav Panel, they will show as areas of blue overlay on the planet when you are in the DSS screen you used to map the planet. However as they show suitable regions where the three different sorts of geological feature and the one biological one can occur it is possible that there are non on the side of the planet you are observing or that those areas are too small to be easily distinguished.

The FSS is for examining the whole system from range not close up work, it also won’t work on objects hidden behind other bodies.

That's the DSS.
When you now look at the planet (in the DSS screen or in normal flight), you should see a blue overlay. In the DSS screen, there should be an indicator on the top telling you to which of the biological or geological signals this overlay applies. There are controls (which you should have bound) permitting you to switch forward/backwards through the different overlays. They may not look different, or they may be as sparse as to be invisible from high orbit. You have a chance of finding the corresponding bio or geo feature anywhere under the blue overlay - but only a chance. With a bit of experience, you'll learn in which biomes inside the blue area the corresponding biologicals could be found (e.g. bacteria like flat plains, fungoida thrive on mountain ridges).

If you don't have any groundside POIs visible (on the planet or in your Nav screen), then those are most likely fleet carriers in orbit around the planet.

Folks, this is way too complicated for me... It's not fun so I'm out!

The devs are book smart and not street smart.

I quite enjoyed mining and it made ma a lot of cash but other than that, the game is meh!

Thank you so much for all your help.

OK, that's your decision and totally fine. If you deem the DSS and FSS too complicated, then yes, you won't like other, much more complicated aspects of the game either.

However, Elite Dangerous is a game that (usually) takes up a fair amount of time, and a lot of figuring out stuff on your own. People here, including me, have been playing it for years and still learn new things regularly. It's not a game that you play for 100 hours and then "finish" it in a great finale. The game is not "meh" per se, it's just not something that you enjoy. I don't enjoy or understand deck-building games at all, but that doesn't make them "meh".

That is fine the game isn’t for everyone, but no game is, and there are big chunks of Elite Dangerous that I don’t bother with myself.

Good luck with finding a game that suits you better.
