The DS were fun to be in, with the hydraulic suspension and fancy instrumentation panels (looked like a plane cockpit more than a car!), and off course that sleek look, the 'Star Wars' kid in me loved being in them. The 'Safari' was about as gorgeous as you could make an estate type car. However all the (dangerous!) faults we experienced with them kind of put them off my radar when i started to drive.
Sure you can forget to put the handbrake on (it seems!), but putting it on then have it fail is maybe worse?
One of my earliest cars was an 80's Alphasud 1.4 Ti, and that was a lot of fun for a few years, so i can't fault your dad for his interest in Alpha's
