Noticed that the Thargoid influence seems to decreased without involvement??

Using DCOH and currently focusing on OYA i noticed that 6 to 8 systems seem to be effected at anytime; where a commander's input/or no input, makes little difference to the forward movement of ridding those systems of Thargoids. I think i saw the same effect in Taranis. Have you seen the same?

If correct am adjusting my story: 1) putting it down to the hard work of all those NPC pilots, working together to get perfectly aligned percentages across multiple systems, or 2) by killing those Orthrus' at the spires, it just weakens the Thargoids supply chains.

...your thoughts?

Indeed—for @StarChaser II, the Thargoid war thread contains a concise overview of this! Below the weekly progress is each type of system, how it works and what to do. In this case, the sections regarding Peripheries and Matrix systems describe what you are seeing:

Peripheries

Each Maelstrom has Peripheral systems, defined as its outermost ten systems where Thargoids are present.
Each week, those Peripheral systems can receive up to 85% Peripheral progress, or 100% if a Matrix (containing a Spire site) is present.
The Peripheral progress is applied as a percentage, ignoring the system strength.

Matrix systems

Some systems contain a Thargoid Barnacle Matrix, revealed on the Galaxy map with the words "Spire site present".
Destroying Orthrus Interceptors at a Spire site affects Peripheral progress (old source).
Looting Spire Refinery Compounds affects Peripheral progress (old source).
Spire Sabotage missions affect Peripheral progress, available at Rescue megaships.

It is indeed due to Spire site activity, it takes many dozens of Commanders to do it for whom I am extremely thankful, and it is being done exactly because it gives percentage progress with which we can actually clear a Maelstrom feasibly. Said progress stops at 85%, which it has just now reached this week, so nothing further is needed at Spire sites for the moment. That is until Thursday, when we will need another siege to complete the next set of ten systems!

As with most Thargoid war features, we get cryptic information at best. The only indication at all is the description below Spire site present in the Galaxy map, which states Expect Thargoids to prioritise defence of this location over peripheral systems. It was entirely upon Commanders to discover what peripheral means and how a prioritised defence works! It is worded from the point of view of Thargoids moving reinforcements to prevent any progress at the Spire, but obviously we are using that in reverse as a means to drain those other systems.

Thank you to both of you for the clarification.
@Aleks Zuno you also have saved me needless time killing Orthrus when those systems reach 85%.
Also never even heard of:
Spire Sabotage missions affect Peripheral progress, available at Rescue megaships.
Will try next tick.

With the Spire sabotage missions you need Contaminated Spire Resources.
These are obtained via the Rescue ship mission board in exchange for 1 Coral Sap, 1 Impure Spire Material and 1 Semi-refined Spire Material. These have to come from the target Spire.
I'm spending the next two days stockpiling these for Thursday.
The coral sap can be obtained easily from the coral trees. The other two are in the megabarnacles which are patrolled by a Banshee and Revenants.

I can confirm that. I changed in some spare spire mats I recovered from one of the two really far ones around Leigong, when those sabotage missions became available(not that I used the item), and the target was (supposed to be) one around Raijin iirc.

And a bit unrelated but while understanding that it is an effective mechanism of system clearing, I find it really stupid spires just completely ignore system strength. and a 5ly system apparently provides the same “reinforcement”(which never seems to really manifest in a tangible way) as one 20+ ly out.

Best method I've found is to hit it with enhanced AX missiles. A medium rack should have enough ammo for a Banshee, I mount 2 and can scoop out 2 barnacles each run, depending on disruption due shutdown fields and the like.
