Notoriety Decay

It makes no sense that notoriety decay stops when logged out of the game. Every single aspect of the game runs in real time, regardless of whether or not you are logged in.

- mission timers
- bgs ticks
- module transfers
- power play merit decay
- ship transfers

The galaxy keeps chugging along without your input.
Notoriety shouldn't be any different.

BTW, is there ever going to be a timer for it?

If notoriety decayed while you were logged out, it would make it useless. Eg: go on a murder gank 187 spree, turn the game off, go to bed, and the next day when your notoriety had decayed overnight just pay off your bounty with hardly any repercussions.

Yeah but that would effect into people logging out and log back in when its gone.

Im not justifying it, just bringing up a result of your change

If you consider the purpose behind Notoriety, it makes perfect sense that it operated differently from the other timers. Notoriety is intended to confound those committing Murder Crimes, and have those players potentially exposed to Bounty Hunting. If one could go on a murder spree, then log off and go to bed and/or work, then come back to zero notoriety, nothing is accomplished.

Go into some empty system and just jam a few keys down so the game thinks there is player input and doesnt disconnect ye...then go to sleep fer 6 hours and check on it again the next day. Rinse and repeat as and when necessary...problem solved like it never existed ^

They could increase it from 2hrs per level and make it run in real time. It's kind of silly to have notoriety, not play for weeks and still be the same level when you return to the game. Make it 4hrs, or more, per level if need be. I'm just saying it should at least be consistent with the way the rest of the game works.

Yeah. I wonder if FD are using this as a way to increase their statistics, so it looks like there are more people playing.

Following your logic the game should play itself when I am logged out because the galaxy is still there my CMDR should still fulfill missions.

Fuel consumption to 0, then death is not a worry?

PS
I believe the life support timer doesn't continue either when you are logged out. Should this also be changed?

PPS

What about fuel? Should it be consumed when we are not docked at a station?

again, it would encourage not logging in.

The game is choc a block with mechanics designed to make players feel like they have to play, most notably reputation decay and PP merit decay or whatever it's called. F2P mechanics abound. Remember that and nothing will surprise you in future.

It would not be useless if Notoriety decayed over days or weeks, and it's effects were more organic instead of binary.

eg:-
- Destroy 1-2 CMDRs in a given period you'll probably go unnoticed.
- Destroy a few more and now you lose access to a load of stations across the bubble.
- Destroy a few more and now you lose access to a load of stations and entire systems across the bubble.
- etc...
- And the Notoriety should slowly decay over many days or even weeks...

This means illegal destruction wouldn't be a game mechanic you can work with and even dodge, it would be a logical penalty that effects you.

See my sig for a clearer description of a C&P punishment system. I'd suggest what we have not are various mechanics butting heads with the important ones not achieving what they need to.

The thing that bugs me is that faction rep decays while logged out, but notoriety doesn't. So I can rack up notoriety on a mission for a superpower-aligned faction, and then log out and my superpower rep from the mission will disappear, but the notoriety won't!

I believe faction rep decay also chugs along.

Everything is for the grind. The grind is for everything.

Yes, having notoriety decay in real time, like every other timer, is literally your Cmdr completing missions while you're logged out. /s

Strawman much?
You have a point, except that mission timers continuing when you aren't playing isn't being consistent. Yet those missions failing in real time can earn you fines, which combined with some notoriety can be a problem for a CMDR.

The game does play itself when you're logged out. Adding the "fulfill missions" part isn't needed. If rep can decay without you playing, notoriety should as well, as they go hand in hand IRL.
