Now I know this game is real....

Where is this puny planet called Earth? I will hyperspace in & destroy all of its inhabitants with my Python when i have the co-ordinates MHuuwwwHaaHhaaHa

Albeit we have lasers and shields, we still seem to have missiles that can impact ships and do considerable damage.
I would expect we also would not be immune to nuclear weapons. I have a funny suspicion that a cruise missile may also do the trick.

I'm confident best case scenario on your behalf is you end up in a blinding white light with intense heat and the people on the planet go 'ouuu pretty'

Konig the barbarian, are we? The Defenders of Earth will be waiting for you in their Eagles... But that's a whole other thread.

If you take the original pictures and doctor them in a photoshop like application, you can bring up the stars and other features. They did this all the time with images from whats-is-face around Saturn in order to have 'nice' images.

If you went with reality in ED concerning light levels, you'd be blinded, unable to see anything. They've done a good job with dimming the lights when near a sun and I'm happy with that.

Edit: Whats-is-face = Cassini. Blank moment... :D

What happens when your canopy gets blown when you're near a star?

That is a great point. Thankfully they put the same 'glass' in the helmet visor.

I lot of pilots got blinded a few decades ago but it was either invent the smart visors or make a ship that didn't have a large expanse of shatter-able material. I mean, yes, ships do see combat but pilots like to see pretty things. So it's a hard call. Sure someone could make a ship that uses cameras and kept the pilot safe at the very center behind much tougher material but people liked the view. There isn't really a market for it.

Seriously. My personal design for a ship is something like the original military Asp with only a very slim, pillar box 'windscreen'. Everything is seen through the ship itself, projected on the inner surface, so the ship flight deck is very toned down to not distract from that. The ship gets extra camera modules and if they are destroyed then the pilot does have to use the tiny 'windscreen'. It would be a nod to VR technology. When I mentioned it a while ago someone kindly linked to a concept of something like an A10 that had this mocked up.

Is there occlusion in Elite, too? So can we see a half earth or half moon?

Absolutely and because you can fly around you can effectively place the camera anywhere you want to create this kind of thing.

Makes you wonder what the ED equivalent of an eclipse is. Some rare alignment of objects such that a rare view is possible. Mentioned in Galnet. Loads of people turning up to see it.
