Now that "Arena" has been floated off.....

With the announcement of Arena as a standalone game, could we please have CQC/Arena and all of its info removed from the main game's screen real-estate?

For me at least it was a total misfit and it made no sense to me that I cannot select a location from which to start my gaming session (from any one of my many stored ship locations), but magically I can jump to a CQC arena as if by magic from the other end of the bubble.

Totally inconsistent and at odds with itself this game sometimes. :D

No, leave it where it is! I absolutely enjoy having the option to play a round of CQC during deep space exploration trips like the current "Distant Worlds" expedition without having to return to a station in the bubble to do so!
I'd rather suggest to have the following features in addition to selecting CQC from the main menu:
  • have an option to start CQC from the station interface (with the ship being parked in the hangar and the pad being freed for other commanders, effectively logging the player out of the current game in the background for the duration of his CQC activity)
  • add a "spectator" mode to the station interface allowing you to watch live matches of CQC
  • have GalNet "eSport" articles cover results of CQC tournaments to better integrate it into the game lore
  • show highlight reels of specific matches on the holographic displays around stations and in hangars that are just used as advertisement places for ship manufacturers at the moment.
  • add CQC decals so I can show off being an eSport champion within a game galaxy :D

In my nightmares you can change it for your your planet coaster avatar and ranking... I think it's here to stay even though it's about as important to me as my latest Solitaire score. i.e. Why do I care about a different game while playing Elite.

Just my opinion of course. I'm certain there are a few people who like it and maybe the re-branding will bring in enough new players to pay for it's development now that it's no longer being beta tested - again just my opinion but I do feel like we all had an update dumped on us to test that is now and always would be a standalone game. Glad I didn't get sucked into that.

I doubt that was FD's intention but this is how it is looking to me at least.

Yes, it's virtual. That's why the ships are free. :)

I don't play CQC much either, but I'd prefer that FD integrate it far more into the main game. So make it available to launch from within our ships. Give us CQC news on Galnet. Place the CQC structures in the main game. Promote CQC for Powerplay factions (maybe Federation only) and give merits for it. Link it to missions, community goals, etc. I consider it part of the main game and it should be integrated more, even if I'll never be any good at it.

I totally disagree. Take it as it would be a modification. Nowadays 50% of all games have a mods and modders and thats a good thing. Overall CQC/Arena is quiet fun to play from time to time especially if you play it together with your friends in a team. Look Quake 3 had also its Arena mode and players used it to get better in the standard game.

Remove open. I don't like it, I don't use it, I will never use it. It's a completely different game from my awesome solo experience and the sheer existence of this login option is an affront to me everytime I look at the main menu.

:D

:p

Touche. I know it's an old argument but so am I... An old argument who is feeling grumpy this morning so I'll let you off with just one wet kipper to the face!

Ok, so the icon stays... but what should it say? CQC or Arena? Yes, I want you to think and it's still the morning! :D

Yes very good points.

There's all these 'screens' with commercials on, a few live streams or similar random speculating or cqc combat could be a very cool addition to them.

The Activity is Close Quarter Combat and shows the rating for that activity - so that is it's name. (and it's afternoon here)

This is exactly as it should of been handled. It could even have lead to some interesting missions... Go to Arena XYZ and bring back W,Y or Z...

I think the "Arena" thingamajig just shows what a massive lemon CQC was / is. Rather than just admitting that it is obviously hugely unpopular with the vast majority of E D players, F D have launched an effort to get people to use it by spinning it off and flogging it cheaply as a separate product. No doubt the next stage will be to make it free-to-play for a limited time / no of games / whatever to once again try to increase uptake.

How long will it be or what will it take for them to admit it was a failure and consign it to history?

In the meantime - please remove the garish abomination from our RHS UI Status Screen.

I don't care what they do with it but that irritating unused CQC rating on my HUD actually spoils my enjoyment of the game every time i see it.

The other rankings are for actual physical career choices and skills you build while flying within the Elite universe so a ranking for a virtual sport does not make any sense at all as far as I can tell.

It's like tacking a rating for your FIFA performance on the end of your list of diving licenses even if you hate sports and never play that game.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I still think that is a made-up reason. If "enjoyment" is the criteria for including some aspect of in the game, I might as well request the "trading" rating to be removed from the HUD, because I think trading is boring as hell. Likewise, I know many esteemed explorers in ED with a "Novice" combat rating who say they don't like to fight in the game, so they might demand to remove that rating from the HUD.

In the end, FD decides which game elements are part of the game, and obviously they decided that CQC and its ranking are indeed valid parts of the game (a very good decision, IMHO), you can take it or leave it, it's your choice. The game is not a "configuration tool" where you select only those parts you like most and build your own custom HUD accordingly.

It still baffles me how the inclusion of the CQC rank in the ranking panel causes so much discomfort with some players. Does it really hurt your self-esteem so much that there is a small "helpless" hiding beneath those other proud rankings? :p

I don't get this Arena stuff. FD took CQC, spinned it off the 'main game', named it Arena, made it cost $$ and called it a brand new game? Or am I missing something?
