News NPC AI update

Thanks Zac and team!

I had honestly just stopped reading all the comments and was just cruising the forums for materials information. Seemed more were playing the forums than the game.

Of course it is too early to comment on today’s update, and frankly I thought it was too early to comment on last week’s update (but just me).

Anyway I appreciate the responsiveness and hard work in turning a diagnosis into a patch. Rare to see a DEV/QA team risk yet another weekend pouring over telemetry!

The insurance reimbursement offer is a stroke of PR genius…. (though I haven’t lost a ship yet)

I’ll keep my Shadowplay on, and if I get an insta-kill or insta-shield drop I will post it to the bug forum.

Regards !

So, if you let the high-end AI have engi weapons, do all players get Engineer weapons for free, even if they don't have Horizons? No? Then the AI shouldn't get them, either. It's completely unfair.

You'd better take engi weapons off other players, then... in case they meet players who don't have them!

Just want to add, that I killed an NPC sidewinder with 2 rail guns and a missile rack(yes 3 weapons).
So I was suspecting the ai was hacking the game engine. ;)

Sorry but the AI still need´s a lot of Balacing.
*snip*
But then he seems to be agile like a Vulture.
I don´t see a Chance to get him in Front of my Ship.
*snip*

There is something very odd with the agility of AI ships at the moment - I've never before 2.1 seen an NPC Python turning at the same rate as my Vulture (with full pips to engines). Something definitely stinks.

The latest patch has toned it down slightly but definitely not fixed it - I am in a Cobra Mk 4 and am Master in combat with pretty good weapons - got interdicted by a Novice Cobra Mk 4 and he destroyed my shields in about 3 or 4 hits whilst I was struggling to even remove the first bar of his.

I also had another enemy Cobra Mk 3 attack (didn't notice the rank) and it destroyed my shields instantly - I was boosting away right from the start, sending chaff all the time, but within 10 seconds he'd completely destroyed my thrusters, leaving me dead in the water. Once I was down to 8% he seemed to get bored and just leave.

There is still a massive aggro issue with pirates scanning me, finding I have no cargo, then blasting me to pieces anyway. It's definitely slightly easier now but the enemy ships are way more agile than any player and the weapons are still overpowered (had one launch approx 30 missiles after me whilst cycling between 2 other weapon types constantly - the cycles were around 9 different weapon attacks per second pulse laser/cannon/missile just non-stop)

Thanks Frontier. I didn't raise my voice against the new AI but it gave me hard times. I am a newbie using only mouse and keyboard. I like it that way as I play this game for fun. (As I had play the original one on C64 in the old times.) The gesture to give back the insurance costs is a great one and gave me back my hope. I started to play this game approximately two weeks before the Engineers update and OMG I really liked it. After the update I got lot of frustrations as I had my ship shot down many times . And yes to all who cannot believe it a ship (mine is an ASP Explorer) can be shot done within 10 seconds. Even FSD cannot save you as the first shots come after the shield can (and occassionally do) wipe the drives or FSD. And you can't do anything just see how the AI shot down in 10 sec the amount of money you raised in the last 5-6 hours (do not forget for a newbie paying 500k credit from 1.5M is a loss.

So sorry for all the hardcore gamers and thanks for your patience and thanks for Frontiers to gave back the fun for me and my fellow newbies.

And one more hint to the ones who wrote about the rotation. I read it in a forum from CMDRs with lot more experience: during turns use your pitch/roll AND the thrusters. Always keep your engine power on the blue area and if this way you still cannot outturn your enemy push the throttle to full speed backward and let him get in front of you. This trick helped me in the last days (on cases where the enemy doesn't use really hard modded weapons) to keep me alive as long as police turned on or I can use my FSD (or some rare cases I shot the enemy).

Is anyone else seeing small ships with apparently infinite missiles? I can dodge a few of them, but they just keep coming. Most of the new AI changes I'm fine with - the NPCs are way harder now, but in a good way - they're subsystem targetting, and things - but I'm really not sure the ammo advantage is very fair, particularly with missiles.

I've not yet decided whether the NPC ships are more agile - I suspect they were always more agile, but they now know how to use that advantage properly. Certainly they're using positioning and sharp turns much more effectively. I've not found any example where NPC ships have too many weapons, either - but it hadn't occurred to me to check.

I am definitely finding that the ships will spam missiles like there's no tomorrow and that they can turn so quickly, it's insane.
I like how they will target specific modules but their accuracy will drop my thrusters to 0% in 2-3 seconds whereas when I target a ship's thrusters, my lasers hit about 10% of the time and don't drop the health down at 40% per hit like the current AI does.

Has anyone else found that chaff does nothing against the AI's targeting? No matter how often I release chaff, the AI never stops hitting me with weapons.
I have also noticed that when you have a large haul, they will start attacking you before scanning while sending you messages about the haul you're carrying.

To give you a little more information, it appears that the unusual weapons attacks were caused by some form of networking issue which allowed the NPC AI to merge weapon stats and abilities. Meaning that all new and never before seen (sometimes devastating) weapons were created, such as a rail gun with the fire rate of a pulse laser. These appear to have been compounded by the additional stats and abilities of the engineers weaponry. (We don’t think the AI became sentient in a Skynet-style uprising! :) ).
The AI/NPC Uprising

I could live with Skynet type scenario (it's a living galaxy!). So the AI/NPC's decided to factionalise and revolt; rising up against our human galactic civilisation.

I think it's pretty cute that the AI decide to re-invent itself and re-balance it's stats (I managed to stay pretty much clear of them during the AI/NPC uprising of late).

See you out there!

Another 2 ships lost this morning, this is utter !!
the missions available DO NOT SUPPORT THE CREDITS REQUIRED to play this game.

    fix the total in balance!

I am a casual player who focuses primarily on exploration. I fly an Asp Explorer with the best gear for exploration purposes. Since the patch, all three times that I have attempted to play I have been interdicted, my shields lowered and my propulsion system destroyed immediately followed by the inevitable 1.1 million ship destruction. I carried no cargo and am not wanted for any crimes. I'm going to wait until I see a bunch of posts saying it's all better before trying to play again. It's just too disheartening to try to play anymore.

NPC NOT balanced!!!

- I feel you pain brother!

I am also a trader, with a well equipped ASP, but on the few short hours I've played the eve, it cost me +25K on two runs. I get interdicted, and don't even have time to turn/identify before I'm devastated. Just made run to station (after interdiction) with 6% hull remaining after about 90 seconds!

This is NOT fun anymore!

I carried 3 tons of Magnetic Emitter Coils and did 3 round-robin Trips to apply FSD Mods at Farseer.

I got Interdicted and attacked by :
- Deadly FAS
- ELITE Courier
- ELITE Clipper
- ELITE Anaconda

On the Anaconda I had to submit and Hi-Wake. It did fire special weapons (got HUD and Voice notifications) but at least those worked as designed and didn't put out any overkill DPS.

Notably, the Cargo Value I was hauling around (acc. Galactic Average) was a mighty 600Cr ;)
(not Wanted, no active Missions and a clear Transactions tab)

Makes me wonder what'll happen when I start hauling valuable stuff around or go Mining in a big rig and carry Millions of Cr worth :p
But so far... no single Insurance case. Arguably, one bugged interdiction (which still happens - Escape Vector suddenly jumps away - Auto FSD-Fail) could have easily changed that.

Neither chaff nor silent running seems to make as much difference as it used to. Maybe I need to learn FAoff or something, but that's pretty hard on a mouse.
