NPC Crew Gender / Skill Level update - No bias found

Hi Folks,

After gathering more data points (102 atm) I have now concluded that there is no evidence for bias between gender and pilot skill level for any of the 5 NPC crew groups. All groups appear to level out to a 50/50 split... the ANNOVA single factor p values (based upon a 95% confidence interval) are all well away from being even remotely significant (p<0.05) with a maximum deviation of ~6% in the widest current group (Competent). Two of the groups even have an exact 50/50 split with a p value of 1 !!!

All 5 groupsp=0.882
Harmlessp=0.323
M/Harmlessp=1
Novicep=0.554
Competentp=0.235
Expertp=1

I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions around the former censored/locked thread because of the behaviour that became evident around this subject... https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...kill-Level-and-their-Gender-Male-Bias-perhaps

Please don't start another flame war against me... I'm not a 'SJW' or any other thing that you care to point my way. I am just someone who thought that she saw something curious in the RNG... Obviously I was mistake - that is the nature of RNG! It's been an interesting exercise for me anyway into understanding the potential impact of RNG on a given system :) And that, my friends, is as near to an apology as you are going to get!

Hopefully, we'll all be a little less ready to 'saddle up' when another RNG anomaly comes to light...

To those that have shown me friendship and support! MY sincere thanks!

Susie

This is why you don't go looking for this bull.

Because 99% of the time it ends up all being in your head and leads you on a wild goose chase of a witchhunt.

There is a big difference between "Hey, I happened to visit a few systems and noticed something I wanted to investigate further." and "OMG, FRONTIER IS PROMOTING GENDER BIAS! THE NERVE OF THEM!"

I get that the world isn't a fair place and that there is favoritism and tribal behavior but can we at least acknowledge the progress that's been made over the past few centuries instead of acting like nothing has changed in the last 500 years?

There is very little pointless running going on when piloting a spaceship though.
I saw a tv program some while ago in which it was suggested that women are very good at piloting combat planes, especially fighters.
So, if that is true then the women might excel at spacecombat too perhaps.

Are women better at handling G-Forces than men?

Chris - So what about women, because at the moment the military tends to select in favour of men. Is there an anatomical reason for that or is it just because historically, it's always been blokes who've gone to war and the women haven't so much until recently?

Todd - Well, at the US Air Force we have female fighter pilots as well, and we found out many years ago in fact that there really is little difference between man and women in terms of G tolerance. Women do just as well as men do on average.

Apparently performance across the sexes in respect to G-Force tolerance is pretty equal.

There is bias in the avatars. Where are the young pilots? Where are the attractive pilots? Why does everyone look like they just finished 40 years of hard labour in the Gibber Desert without sunscreen?

Maybe our cockpit shields aren't very effective at filtering UV?

We must be told!!

A side note: women have a long history of being excellent pilots and cosmonauts in Russia. Also snipers. It's cultural.

Underused in UK military history except as ferry pilots in WWII

Although obvious aviators of note - Amelia Earhart and of course many female astronauts as you say.

There has been enormous progress towards equality over recent decades (I guess you could say 'centuries' but I guess from this side of the table, it doesn't feel like that)! It is still irritating (the word I used was redacted) when my SLF pilot calls me Sir (I'd have thought my gender fairly obvious from my avatar choices) but these are totally trivial irritations compared to many wider RL issues! Perhaps NPC pilots should address everyone as 'Shirley' :x For the most part, I get to enjoy games like ED that are the remnant preserve of men and (at least for the most part) not get my head kicked in for being a woman fishing in the men's pond. So I sincerely Cheer to the progress made so far towards equality and mutual respect! Long may it flourish into something truly wonderful where we are truly all equals!

There you go ... :p SJW speech done for the day! [haha]

The bias toward ugly still exists, though (I mean the avatars). That part is clear :)

The gender implications of the use of 'Sir' in a command structure aboard ships both military and civilian have long since been eradicated.

It is meant to demonstrate respect from a subordinate to a superior REGARDLESS OF GENDER.

It's like the title of Commander. Even if your official rank is Lieutenant or Captain, if you are the final ultimate authority of a vessel, nobody is or should bat an eyelash if anyone refers to you by the rank of Commander. Because you are the Commander of your ship.

I get to enjoy games like ED that are the remnant preserve of men and (at least for the most part) not get my head kicked in for being a woman fishing in the men's pond.

This. Right here. es me off to no end.

As someone who believes in equality. I don't believe in Elite or gaming being 'the preserve' of any gender. I have never seen it that way. And I never will.

All I see, are individuals.

The fact that you started slinging gender around is something I see in people who can't look past it. They ironically claim to be for equality but without the ability to look past the gender and see people for the individuals they are, they are the very thing they claim to be against.

I would not tolerate anyone on this board disparaging women on the basis of gender for playing this game and enjoying themselves.

So as an egalitarian, a true advocate for equality, what makes you think I'm going tolerate you, a woman, demonizing a game studio and it's player base for 'male bias' in a clear attack on what you call a 'male preserve'?
