NPC crew worth?

Is a NPC crew worth the cut they take. I have one that I brought up from Novice to Dangerous. See takes 9%. I have paid her over 660 M. She is 85 % from Elite. She is great in a battle when I have multi hostiles . Will she be needed for the carriers? Should I drop her ? She will be taking 10% at elite.

Anyone else have a crew member they are keeping? Do people only higher when wanted then drop?

If poor at combat I doubt a NPC pilot will help. If I need credits I don't like an NPC crew taking a cut. If I'm going for combat Elite the crew also takes part of the combat points taking much longer to obtain. Otherwise with lots of credits and already Combat Elite they are a lot of fun to have around. Definitely adds to the immersion a little if that's your thing.

Though I didn't get involved in any pew pew until just almost a year ago; I've maintained at least one crew member the entire time I've been involved in ED which has been since the launch on the PS4 more than two years ago. Space is really really large, I'm single in the game and she great company for those long lonely nights. And in so much as it's always dark in space; That's a lot of loneliness. And it really help that she is one good looking crew member.
I'm only been on PC for a little over a month and have an excess of billions and billions of cr's that with the exception of purchasing a carrier have no use for. I own and loaded out the way I wanted 5 ships, all with specific purpose's and have nothing else to buy but the carrier when it comes. So unless it's more than 5 billion, she's doesn't really cost anything I can't afford. Her bio states she has a lot of combat experience, but I don't utilize her for that if you get my drift.

I have an Elite one that I bought for as cheap as possible and they now get a 10% cut of everything I make regardless of whether or not they're just sitting around doing absolutely nothing in the crew lounge. This guy is almost a billionaire on my efforts, the mechanic is broken and they are ripping us all off!

Pay a weekly retainer based on the original hire cost and a 'bonus' if they're aboard ship!

[Note: At what point can the NPCs buy themselves an escape pod to avoid permadeath?]

Supposing for a moment that one has been playing seriously for more than 3 months. One could have gazillion's of cr's and nothing to do with it. Except spread it around a bit. When ones end game finally arrives and they are waiting at the pearly gates or that other place, one is not going to take it with them.

Personally I did try to use NPC characters all the way up to all three being Elite. Then because I found various issues around them taking orders I fired all three and never hired them again. They are quite a rip off.

They're quite useful in some circumstances. I'm killing Thargoid scouts at the moment and the fighter is able to distract enough of them to allow me to get them one at a time. The harmless one seems to do quite a good job, so not really any point in ranking one up for that.

One problem with ranking them up is that if ever you make a mistake and get killed when you have the crew on board, you lose them forever and have to start again, which is a shame because you do become attached to them.

Remember that the credits you have and what the NPC takes is only a number on the screen. Friendship and help is always worth more than that.

Mine was very lucky when I hired her.

Most major points have already been made.
I might add that not all crew hires respond well to training. Some never get good or follow instructions. Fire them. Also, a well trained and performing crew can often fly your "Mothership" as well or maybe even better than you. Try getting into your fighter and provide support for them. See how that works with practice.
