NPC names - first name + surname or just surname?

On a more general point, are people planning to use an avatar recognisable from the forum, or create a new persona? It would be nice to "recognise" people from the forum in-game (though some of us may feel their current avatar is a bit, well, naff for a space adventurer:eek:
Those that wish to do griefing may want to keep the two identies seperate (or possibly those like me who may feel embarrassed that their dogfighting skills may have diminished over the years)
Personally I'd like us to carry over our forum identities wherever possible, and keep the community built up here going when we are in bleak, lonely space attacked by hordes of (npc) pirates.

It will vary. I would like to have that connection, so when my commander name is recognized, I will add it to my signature.

What he said... except I have signature display turned off anyway so won't have a clue who anyone is personally! :p

?? We can though. I'm not sure what the pledge level was but we can add NPC names to the database. Perhaps I'm missing your meaning here.

I´ve just registered to the forums and I´m really having a hard time deciding on NPC name.

I can´t decide wether to use my real name just to be in a game, or if I should come up with a cool fictional name.
We all want our 15 minutes of fame, don´t we? :)
Real name or fictional? hmm, how did you decide on what to choose as NPC name?

I intend to use my Forum name as that is my chosen online name anyway.
but for my space station and planet name i will be using my real world name or variants of it just so I am imortalised in the Elite universe. even if no one knows me they will know that the station they are about to dock with is named after a real person and that my name will be seen by millions of people.
MWWAAAHAHAHAHA!!!

Names/Avatars

Yeah i will be using a different name(if approved) to the one i use here, but will add to signature when confirmed, be nice to see familiar names/avatars which am sure to get to know better before game comes out.....still gonna attack you all though!:p

My reserved commander name is one I've used in other online games when piloting, so fits in well enough. Theres a minute possibility I may even run into old friends from games long gone that way.

My NPC name is my wifes name, I thought it was a nice touch to have her name put in the game. Especially as her first name surname combination is unique in the world as far as we hae been able to tell... (My surname is very localised to the south west and she is German and has a non English firstname)

I will add pilots name to a signature when the game gets launched most likelly.

I just changed my Commander name, I wonder how many times I'll change it before the cogs disappear?

My NPC is called Sean Lennon, after my son. If you meet him in the game be nice to him, he's only a baby.

lol i did the same and put my wifes name as my NPC, she dosnt know yet (it can be her birthday present...am cheap!)

i wanted to keep my Lone Gunman name for my commander name, as have used it to in other games, but looks like you cant use titles like that :(
so i have changed mine several times till i have something am reasonable happy with. Shame, as to i am hoping to bump into old friends on ED, and would be easy to recognise with old name.

I read on one of the posts that when choosing names we should avoid names that include trade marks or other IP.

Whilst I understand this rule for NPC names as these will form part of the product that Frontier will sell and therefore put Frontier at risk of legal action it doesn't follow that the rule should apply to Commander names.

Commander names are chosen by individuals for use in game only. Although we can choose our Commander names now they will not form part of the released game, just reserved in the database.

When the game goes on sale new players will pick Commander names regardless of any trade mark or IP issues. If such names were not be allowed then Frontier would have to check every name registered; can't really see them doing this.

It would seem that there should be no restriction, other than variations of Jamieson and duplication, when choosing a Commander name.

I can't see any reason why Frontier wouldn't check new player names that are going to end up on their servers. If there is a legal issue now, there will be one then.
