Newcomer / Intro NPCs: Once they retract their hardpoints they don't deploy them anymore?

Not sure if I want to go back to trading.
I even sold my cargo racks for hull reinforcements
But you never know.
Maybe if the climb from Deadly to Elite in combat gets too steep I may get bored and go back to trading or try some exploration :)

You should absolutely do what you enjoy. There's no requirement to get ranks just because they are there, or indeed do any activity that doesn't interest you - and definitely don't chase credits! :)

Getting to combat Elite won't really be difficult, just a lengthy process. Unlike the other ranks, it's not measured by credits but by combat experience (xp) which you get by blowing up ships.

As your own rank increases, so the xp (points essentially) you get for destroying ships that aren't high rank goes down, so you either need to destroy a lot of high ranking ships - at Deadly rank you really want either Elite or Deadly ranked kills - or even more lower ranked ships! All kills do count for something nowadays, but destroying lower ranked ships will be hardly noticeable on the percentage bar, you'll need to destroy lots before you see the number go up.

Anyway, to be clear, not trying to put you off, just preparing you for what at first may seem like very slow progression. But as I said before, do what you enjoy, it is after all a game, not a job. ;)

And seeing ships explode can be very satisfying. :)

Yes, the High RES site near the port Im camping now seems to be very uneven. One day I get a lot of FDLs, FAS and Anacondas piloted by Deady and Elite, next days I get only Cobra IVs and Sideys piloted by Masters and Experts.

I think I should leave this place and go look for a port where I can upgrade my Cobra III and then get a Chief with A grade equipment.

And yes, seeing ships explode is very satisfying. I even fly through the explosion to enjoy it more 🤣

I have noticed a few NPC bugs recently. NPCs that just sit in space in the middle of their routine (easy pickings). Ones that seem locked in a loop (flying around in circles). I suppose I should report them.

Is this normal behavior? Once they retract their weapons they don't deploy anymore?
Yep. If an NPC has triggered the "leave instance" script, nothing will stop it except its destruction.
Heh. Weird. I'd report it, sounds like something that shouldn't be happening. :)
Ever has it been thus.
Assuming the NPC was low ranked, they will indeed do dumb things, they are programmed to be as good as their rank.

So always worth being aware of the rank of the NPC you are dealing with, as you won't always have such ineptitude facing you... ;)
If an NPC decides to run, nothing will stop it trying. Rank only determines if and/or when the NPC will charge FSD.

Watching Anacondas blow up is most spectacular as they have the best damage models.

This won’t affect your progress if you stick with your Cobra and proposed Chieftain, but if you do move into a ship that uses a Ship Launched Fighter and employ an NPC pilot for it they will besides taking a big chunk of your earnings will take around half of the combat points you earn while they are on your ship, if you leave them behind they only take the money.

I took a liking to bounty hunting so I will reach Combat Elite before Trading and Exploration.
I am 2% away from Deadly now.
When you get your deadly rank, you're just past half-way to elite. You need to kill another 3000 ships. Without engineering, the Vulture is probably the best and most fun ship to deal with one on one combats and bounty farming. With engineering, any of the ships of Python size upwards become virtually invulnerable against NPCs unless you take on too many at a time.

You can speed up your journey to elite a lot by switching from one high RES to the next until you get a spawn of only small ships. You also get instances where not many ships turn up or only a couple of cops, or the cops all swarm around the bad guys, but only one Viper shoots them while the rest are just posturing. If you get any of those, either relog or jump to the next RES. LTT15574 is really good because it has many high RESs.

Ah, yes.
I've seen a lot of those cases.
6 Police vessles including 3 Anacondas circling one pirate, only one Eagle shooting with a pulse laser while the Anacondas don't even have their hardpoints deployed...

Thank you for the tips, d8veh.
