nVidia Front Buffer at 70 % (normally at 5--10 %), FPS drops to 30 % of normal

Hello everybody, sometimes (or quite usually) I am stumbling across that "bug" (or how to describe it), where game normally goes like 70--100 FPS, suddenly goes for 10--20 FOR MINUTES. The game is quite unplayable (there's an input lag even), it's horrible, I haven't play for months, because of this (it occured me even before, but I just give up on the Game) :-|

When they announced all Horizons accounts would be with this engine, so the same bug, I was horrified -- an yes, since that last update, even on my other accounts and all other computers with HOrizons only, this bug occurs.

I noted a few things, I am looking through detailed stats via MSI afterburned, during those "slow sessions" there's a heavy Frame Buffer load, around 70 %, normally it occurs around 5--10 %. GPU is then locked at 100 %, but only like 30 % of power. Cpu is "normal" (around 70 % as usual).

Few pics bellow, I am giving on the issue tracker, that bug is there but not solved, so at least we can discuss it here, if anyone stumbled upon it as well :) Thank you!

Here you can see a normal 74 FPS, GPU at 100 %, around 120 W (it's not much, normally it has like 180 W), under it you can see GPU1FB at 40 % And suddenly!

Can you see? Now it has like 83 Watts, FB at 71 %, FPS at 26 :-(

For a refference "good behaviour" here:

Here you can see, 81 FPS, 100 % usage of GPU, 160 Watts, GPUF1 at 14 % :)

For a refference, i7-8700K, RTX 2060 OC, 2560×1080.
Later I discovered if I run that on 1440p with DSR and AMD FSR at QUALITY, I have a better performance and almost same picture, I could even turn on Shadows to HIGH and still having 80--100 FPS at stations.

But then the bug hits... :-D

I've noticed something similar. No matter on foot or in space sometimes an instance is performing much worse, relogging makes it perform normally again.

Look like maps' issue. Usually I open system map by keybind, waiting spinner stop. Close it. If fps even slightly less then it should, then I open galaxy map and wait while fps is normal then close it (by keybind again from keyboard). In 99% it fixes. Other 1% - restart the game.

I tried that "trick" with a local map (system map) and either that worked or I god lucky :) But thanks, it's a good tip! :)

GPU FB is the memory controller load. Looks like the game is getting hung up on the GPU doing memory intensive tasks. Performance not improving at lower resolutions, while still being GPU limited, implies the bottleneck is something that is largely independent of resolution, like vertex or other geometry work.

This was guaranteed to happen to me when using my poor cards with 3 and 4 gigs of vram. With 11 gigs now on my new used 1080ti, doesn’t seem to happen anymore.

Yeah that issue made me cry. Go into super cruise after it happens and super cruise is fine. When you return to the station it’s immediately broken. The only good experience you’ll ever have is in that first few minutes after loading in. I’d recommend honestly trying legacy for a bit and see I how you personally feel about not playing odyssey ever again…

Is that something you would expect to be fixed / supported? You can see how excessive positivity is just noise and it’s a real decision you have to make.

Yes, this is happening a lot on 4 Gb cards. However, lately I froze nvidia to 520 version driver (linux) because on latest 525 RDR2 was not working at all. And suddenly .... Elite is more-less normal play now, sometimes need to use "maps trick". I tried v525 too to compare. I could see bad performance of Elite 3 mins after game started everywhere.

Really drivers make a difference? I guess that sounds likely. I'm running pascal so happy on 511.79. They gave that one guy on the nvidia subreddit a new graphics card, so he won't be doing his driver benchmarks anymore (irony..). So until something doesn't work or breaks i'll be on this version.

I'd suspect that, yea, thank you :)
