Back in the early 2000's flying combat among friends our salute was. ..l. .l.. lol Usually as we went down in flames.

Initially I just used it because...well I don't know why. Maybe just because you can type it easily with your off hand, unlike <O.
Now though it seems more or less "officially" a nuance of the Elite community, because:
