Game Discussions Objectively the best game

Portal series is another example of perfect execution with a strong storytelling, and involving the player with the main character. These are also at the top of many lists for that reason.

I don't think memory works like that... unless you end up with dementia, then a lot of stuff fades from memory. But here's hoping neither of us end up with that one!

Its the ability to recall that gets hard rather than what is stored in memories. Music of early days can trigger memory in demntia sufferers

The BEST game, the VERY best game?

Battlefield 2142 - Titan mode

  • It was the first shooter of it's generation that introduced a new unique game mode.
  • No other shooter (or battlefield game) have done anything like it since.

Seriously, that game mode was fantastic and all i see since are the same rehashed mechanics and nothing really innovative.

DICE need to do a Battlefield 2143 darn it.

Battlefield 2142 - Titan mode

I liked it, but BF 2142 inherited some of BF2's silliness that kept me from enjoying it as much as I would have.

The anemic sprint gauge and inability to sidestep while sprinting bothered me. Always annoys me when my soldier character in a shooter seems to have less agility and endurance than the real me...I'm not looking for Doom Guy's 50mph sprint, unlimited endurace, and ~8g acceleration on foot, but someone who can sprint for more than fifteen seconds at a time would be nice. Weapon bloom was also unreal...I get that the game was on a condensed scale, but the inaccuracy of some weapons was taken to the extreme.

No other shooter (or battlefield game) have done anything like it since.

Tribes 2, Unreal 2 XMP, and Planetside all had base assault/defense gameplay that felt at least vaguely similar.

Personally I think the Halflife series are the best....only spoilt by Valves inability to FINISH IT OFF!! grrrrr give me HL3!!
I think Halflife 2 had really good choreography. HL1 not so much. HL2 really took it a step forward with level design, soundtrack, (sound) effects, pacing and innovation (like gravity gun, NPC helpers). Alyx was also popular.

Oh yes, it was far from perfect, but imagine what they could do today if they made a new version of that game, not to mention longer distance map, larger base ships and destructible environments.

True, but those were fixed bases and not a flying baseship you had to actually fly to and board.

Dude, I SO loved the launchable pods for Titan invasion. I sucked at invading tho. Probably my most played Battlefield game.

That was a fun game, wasn't it?

The hover tanks were horrible, but all in all it was quite cool.

I'm probably the only one that misses Battlefield Vietnam. It was the most buggy and unbalanced BF game, but the atmosphere was outstanding.

My favourite was BF 1943...a kind of 3 map mini game that appeared just before BF3 launched. I'm not sure if it was exclusive to the Xbox 360 since it was only purchaseable via the Xbox store with the old Microsoft points system at that time.

It was a capture the flag epic where after every round, players changed sides and took turns in assaulting/defending the 3 island maps...tanks, planes, limited load-outs to 3 simple classes all with the same weapons, 24 player servers... which for it's time and on the Xbox 360 was a first...awesome.

I agree, but HL was still at the time ground breaking compared to other FPshooters. As you say HL2 took it to a whole level higher and is my all time fave game, I loved the story and the physics puzzles and wish more games went in that direction...although I hated the final huge walker battle in EP2...I had to cheat to get past it!! Yup Alyx was and even now is head and shoulders above most "helping NPCs" in other games I have played. Dog was awesome too...in fact most characters in the game are memorable!

Personally I think Un1 nailed it with his proffer of D&D, but if we're talking fps then for my money Bioshock stands alone. Rapture is unparalleled for gaming environments and the dark synergy between guns, traps and powers made for easily the most compelling moment to moment game play I've ever experienced in a shooter. To top it all off, it had the best story I've ever seen in the medium of video gaming.

To be completely honest my "objectively best game" changes depending on what I'm currently playing.

I do have old favourites and fond memories, but more often or not when I try to replay them, they're... old.

One game that was my favorite of all time that I played back in the day (must be over 20 years old now) that's held up remarkably well is Riven: The Sequel To Myst. I still love diving into that one every other year or so.

Oh yes, I also enjoyed the Myst games. Not sure I'd be able to play them now, however. I got lazy and dumb over the years.

ED is by far my most played game. Nearly 2000 hrs I think. MAkes me question my sanity.

I've been playing RPG's on and off since the mid 80's and was aware of Traveller around abouts the Megatraveller era, so, after I first played Elite. Elite owes a huge debt to Traveller. There's loads pretty much directly lifted from it. I wish online MMO's and in particular ED could pull off the interest of a good RPG. But as stated here - those detailed scenarios only really work for the first few to experience them and because of the game-breaking nature of the 3rd-party-tool and the interwebs then what are the options really? I do feel that there's a massive trick being missed somewhere. Somehow our ED CMDR stories need to be able to bump into each other in a bit more of a meaningful way.
