OBS Studio question

If anyone uses the above, could they answer my question please? Appreciated!

I want to create a video - I've done this before albeit badly - but now I have a dual monitor set up.

When I start OBS, it shows two screens. I only want one recorded. Should I switch one panel off before starting a video? Is there a setting in OBS that lets me select one panel only? Or doesn't it matter?

Thanks!

You can select the source. There is also a box in the bottom left where you can set up various presets. I have not reinstalled since my OS SSD failed and I had to do a reinstall so I can't remember the names for things. There are options for selecting active window, specific window etc (I think I had set it to specific elite executable, not sure though).

OBS is mainly for streaming. It is not good for just recording play according to my experiences. For recording play maybe use Fraps, GeForce Experience or MSI Afterburner. :)

I use OBS for recording and it works well for me.
The Display Capture source lets me select from either display:

If it only shows one, maybe you have AMD Eyefinity or NVIDIA Surround or something combining your displays into one?

OBS is great, I've never had a problem recording with it, and I can set the options to what I want for input and output easily. I usually have it up while playing, with the replay buffer enabled so I can catch anything cool that might happen.

On the other hand I've had problems with the GEForce stuff, so there ya go.

Anyway you got your question answered.

I'd argue that OBS Studio is better than any of these, even 'for just recording play'.

FRAPS only allows it's codecs, which have minimal compression, resulting in extreme file sizes and an additional transcode step if one wants to do anything with the video.

GeForce Experience is just a front-end for NVENC. OBS can also use NVENC with the same performance and has vastly more options.

MSI Afterburner isn't bad, but it's NVENC and AMF plugins are inferior to OBS, and it's also lacking a few options.

I'm amazed FRAPS is still even being sold. It hasn't been updated since 2013, it doesn't support modern APIs, and its crappy codecs can take several gigabytes to store minutes of footage - while modern codecs can store hours of good quality video in the same space. It was good in 2008, but there is no reason for anyone to even entertain the thought of using it in 2022.

With no development, it's pure profit at this point. But yeah, it's barely usable for a lot of modern scenarios. Some people just stick with what they know.

Bum

I uploaded to the Toob, but my vid was over 15 mins. Processing abandoned. Had to put my phone no. in for verification.

However, that won't allow an existing upload to re-process so now I have to re-upload! It took two hours!

Grrr!

Yep. There's no doubt about it - cool kids use OBS

Say, I haven't had any particular size issue or delay with youtube processing. Maybe you are making longer recordings though. But you might check the encoding settings. I use "high quality, medium file size", mkv format, .. and the hardware encoding setting set to 'nvenc', nvidia I guess. The 1.5m covert operation video that I uploaded recently in your What's Up thread, still on my drive, that's 188Mb

I have OBS set up with a couple of keybinds to start/stop recording, and dump the replay buffer to a file. I usually remember what keys they are. If not, I bring up the window and click the appropriate button :)

I set start/stop record to scroll lock and pause/unpause on numlock so the lights on the keyboard tell me its status!

Right, my vid is on YT and the standard def mode has been processed. It's now doing the HD processing.
  • How long does that take?
  • Can I log off the Toob while this is happening or do I need to keep the browser open?
  • When I recorded the video, it was in 4K - will YT need another round of processing to take of that or is it all part of the HD process? Ah, wait. I can see the SD icon has stopped flashing and HD and 4K are still going. I s'pose that's that answered! Wow - it'll be a while then!
Sorry for the n00b questions...
