Oculus 0.7 SDK update

Ok this is my first post . I am old so played the original on a BBC model B.
If any of the Devs are still reading this I just Paid $180 for a Lifetime of updates and then you stop supporting Oculus.

I am left with an option switch to Windows 10 and be able to Play every other game or stay on windows 8 and only play Elite.

It sucks I have waited a month but am done gonna make the upgrade now. If I could get my money back I would.

I don't think they have ever said they are not going to support Oculus in future. I think the situation is that they are not going to make any interim updates until they know what the release Oculus SDK is going to look like. Understandably, they are not going to make a 100% commitment that they will support Oculus in case it either can't be done, or it requires so many changes that it would impact on the release date for a major update.

I agree this is unfortunate if you want to upgrade your Oculus SDK to a later version for other reasons outside of ED, although I think I might have read recently that they are going to provide a tool that allows you to roll back the SDK (?) between different versions.

What?

I'm sure new games will support Windows 8 for a good while yet, so you could stay on 8 and be fine.

I kinda get where you're coming from as I upgraded to 10 before I found out about this issue. I just picked up a cheap SSD that I've loaded Windows 7 onto. That way when I want to play with VR I just reboot into that and crack on. It's actually quite handy as I can now set up the 7 install just for VR, drivers etc, but can play around with DX12 and new stuff on the 10 install.

I gave all this a lot of thought recently and opted to wait a bit on the whole VR thing as it seemed a bit premature and unsettled. I was running 3 X 24" monitors at 1920X1200 and it wasn't too bad, but the monitor borders and alignment were distracting. I thought about the whole 4k thing, but it seems that 4k pushes the envelope and seems a bit of a reach with a multi-monitor setup.

In the end I settled on a Dell 34" 3440X1440 curved monitor and a 980Ti video card. The result was a pleasant surprise, as i can not only run the 34" monitor at 100+ frame rates, but i was also able to attach a 24" 1920X1200 monitor without losing any frame rate. I can watch TV, surf, and otherwise use the 24" monitor on the desktop while gaming in the 34" with overall terrific performance. I might up grade the 24" to a 27" 2560X1440 some time down the road to give it a better match to the 34" - but not a big deal right now.

Being set up this way gives me a great game experience now and hopefully will be a good enough platform to run VR when the technology is ready for prime time.

2 TV channels playing while at the Home menu in ED with 98 FPS showing in ED. SC typically will be around 140 FPS.

And it's quiet.

I'm testing some solutions, the cheapest way from the wallet side to make elite work in VR also with the latest SDK, but won't say nothing more. I already see a FAIL on it's way! Hahahaha

"Won't say nothing more". So you will say more or did you mean you won't say anything more?

Double negatives are a scourge.

The second one! hahahah
In any case it's a fail, you can play with Deskope but the tracking of the the OCULUS sensors is not possible with the new SDK for now.
For now I rolled back to 0.6, and no more mind freaking

The VR in Elite conversation never seems to die,

? not sure what you mean. Of course it is not going to die, for me VR is the only way to play elite therefore I am going to talk about it. Many others feel the same way. I have been injured for the last 3 weeks with trapped nerve in neck so cant use rift or my throttle...... no rift means no ED for me.

(physio starts tomorrow, fingers crossed for the weekend I can get back in my ship :) )

Ok thanks to whoever suggested dual booting.
Bought a new SSD loaded windows 8 on it (you have too Microsoft wont let you activate windows 10 with an 8 code on a clean install)
Upgraded to windows 10. Windows 10 looks at the hardrives and asks you if you want 8.1 or 10 at boot.( makes it easier as its hard to get into the BIOS to change your boot option)

Frame rates on other games appear to be much better under Direct mode and 10.

So $200 worse off but now can use Elite and other 0.7 and 0.8 games :)

Dual booting isn't necessary.

Rebooting isn't necessary.

Just need the runtime switcher from reddit.

Run the 0500 command and u can play Elite.

When u come out of the game you can run the 0700 command and return to 7 or 8 runtime.

Dual booting is obsolete.

When VR matures... and Elite Dangerous gets story content I may only visit my real life occasionally :)

Signed up just to comment on this. Is there a big reason not to simply support 0.6, since it at least allows for backwards compatibility (for now) w/0.7/0.8?
