oculus love with 1.3.2

Well, I've just installed uninstalled 0.4 and installed 0.5 and thought I'd try to see if Frontier have allowed Direct access to Oculus, rather than running ED on a separate screen.

Unfortunately, due to some adjudication server issue, I was unable to get into the final game, but all the pre-menus and the rotating ship looked MUCH improved over using Oculus as a second monitor.

Sadly, I couldn't get into the final game but if the initial improvement is anything to go by, I'm quite excited !

Having never used 0.4 0.5.0.1 was my first oculus version and its worked pretty well. I havent had any crashes at all in Elite. When i get on tonight will see if they have done optimizations i guess.

yes, 0.6 doesn't work straight of the bat,
you need to restart the hmd a few times, well that's wot worx for me

It's a wasted effort, since ED doesn't yet use any of the juicy 0.6 features. Unless you need it installed to play more up-to-date titles, it would be far more rational to stick with 0.5.x, and not have to faff around with edge case incompatibility in ED.

i havent touched my SDK since i had it up and running with elite, with the new patch it doesnt work anymore (4.4)
If i download .5, how do i go about updating?

Has anyone been able to get into the game yet to see if it does make any noticeable improvements?

I made it in but can't really tell - It certainly runs smoother, but I upgraded from runtime 0.44 and most importantly, the upgrade required me to reboot my computer which I haven't done in about two months prior to that, so it's most likely the latter.

Can anyone confirm if direct mode is working now?

Yes, Direct Mode works..
Is it smooth? yes and no, it is better than before, its playable if you don't sling your head around too much, but sudden movements do show judder.
It mirrors to your main monitor, which I don't like, but yeah it works, sorta.
IMHO stick with Extended for now, but this is a step in the right direction.

*I should add I'm out in the big black exploring right now so this obviously doesn't include a test of high traffic areas.

i5 2500K @ 4.5ghz
Windows 7 64bit

My experience as well, also refresh rate was locked to my main monitor which is something I don't have a problem with in extended.

Erm because of the post I quoted?

Yes it is !! :)

And it is much improved over the secondary display. The colours are more vibrant, the frame rate is MUCH better and my big bug bear, the text visibility is surprisingly a lot better. I think the latter is because of the higher frame rate and perhaps a lower latency of movement.

All in all, it's chalk and cheese to using the oculus as a secondary monitor. Vast improvement !

colours are just alive and deep. Surprised at that part, but lovely !!

i am deep in space atm, and hyperspace and nebulae are much better.

i checked a training mission to see how the station rendered and there was a slight lagging blur. Previously there wasn't a blur, it just renderered ever so slightly slower, but now it renders faster but a slight blur. Hard to put into words.

the warning about not using direct mode still pops up as well, so maybe there are still issues that I've yet to encounter.

i did about 45 minutes in solo of my exploration CG. No disconnects and no oculus issues. I am well pleased.

well done FD

My experiences last night were super positive too. No stutter at all. That being said as it was upgrade day I was playing in solo which probably taint my results. Still it was my best ever vr experience in elite yet :)

Don't really see anything better, just the same to me. really juddery in high traffic areas, but that was the same as before the patch.
