Oculus Rift DK2 or Consumer Version?

Gear VR and the Oculus Rift are not competitors or different iterations of each other. They are two totally different products, and both have been in development in tandem for a long time. Even at the show demos, they have both been on display to try side by side for a long time. GearVR isn't news and has nothing to do with the Rift's release date.

Oh, i know they are different iteration, what I was saying is that the Rift currently has no release date (2016 perhaps?) and Oculus just announced the samsung phone version as the first consumer version.

So it might be a longer wait for people deciding to get the CV1 over the DK2.

One point I'll add to this thread OP, is that if you do go ahead and order a dk2, it'll be really hard to motivate yourself to play anything on a monitor or screen again, effectively putting most of your game collection out of action. Especially if you only have a couple of hours to game a day like me.

I wouldn't count on having a CV any time soon. From the sounds of it. It sounds like the CV isn't coming out until next year.

Well, if you're so fortunate to own a graphics card that can run that resolution at 90Hz.
And the interface for it, not sure if HDMI or DP could support such a data rate.

Ahhh! So it's a good generation away then given the technology step?

Does anyone with some experience using the DK2 in Elite Dangerous have any opinions on whether it's worth waiting for the consumer version that comes out in November? If the DK2 works perfectly fine I don't see that much of a reason to wait, but I'd prefer getting the better experience.

Mmmmmmm......

I will answer a different question the same way.....

If my DK2 was eaten by Sasha (a pic of her below), and my insurance did not pay out, would I buy another DK2 or wait for the CV1?

I would buy another DK2 in a heart beat - explain to Sasha we would be putting her on a diet (to save money as she eats 2 lbs of tripe a day) - and get back to VR ED as quickly as possible....

Hope that helps.....

....Sasha - the DK2 eater..... :D

OK... So a marginal DPI improvement then, from which I understand will be useful as the DK2 is a tad pixelated?

I guess the holy grail will be 4K.

While the pure resolution isn't a super increase, the screen door effect is a lot less noticeable due to smaller spaces between the pixels.

By all accounts, the image quality is far better than the DK2.

I have to agree with NoshDaMinsk, I can't wait for the CV1, but if my DK2 was to get broken between now and then, I would buy another DK2 immediately, I couldn't play ED without it!

yup, and I've been wondering why people suddenly necrod the thread.

Long story short; I got the DK2 and it was kinda fun to experiment with. I saw some pixels in ED, but really not as badly as with some Oculus made applications. HOWEVER the big problem is that I apparently have motion sickness. I blame it on my friend's friends not stopping that spinning attraction in a playground although I yelled at them to stop several times, so I threw up 5 hot dogs. I do assume that this is how I got motion sickness since after that day I couldn't spin around without feeling dizzy anymore. Usually within 2 minutes of using the DK2 in ANY application at all I do start to feel weird. After 15 minutes of ED I feel like I need a break.

So yeah, not really worth it, but at least I know that I've got this problem now.

Wow - surprised you got motion sickness with Elite. When i first got the DK2 i tried lots of demos and experienced a fair bit of motion sickness for just about all that have you moving about (rather than as a fixed point like with Elite). So playing Elite seems very very easy experience. Some demos just walking around a room i would get huge motion sickness (technolust...but i think its also to do with the sound and light it is very "in your face" and abrasive).

I agree. I can force myself to go for 30 minutes in Elite Dangerous, but any demo is gonna be 20 minutes max. ED is a lot easier on my head than other DK2 applications. I hope to overcome it within the next few months. I will keep trying to play with it every few days for just 15 minutes at a time until my body gets used to it. At least guides say that you should stop playing when you feel motion sick so you can build up an immunity over time. Let at least 24 hours pass between each session.
