Oculus Rift SDK update

The most important thing, IMHO, would be for FD to offer a commitment to supporting r1.0 of the SDK. Is this the current intention Edward?

Personally I don't play anything else with the Rift, and haven't updated my SDK runtime for months, specifically because ED works fine on the one I have.

The way the current statement is written it sounds as if you're not guaranteeing any future Rift support. I hope what is *actually* meant is that you can't guarantee support for any further beta releases, but that you will guarantee eventual support for 1.0 prod.

Go on, do a man a favour and put these heart palpitations to rest :D

The same statement was made in the weekly news letter. Without it being any more explicit, I now take it to mean no more development work between now and go live.

It's a tough one because I'd love every effort to be made to continue support of the DK2 but they obviously have a business to run. Bah! Never mind.

I'm most curious about the new direct mode- it seems like they are getting solid support from AMD and nVidia from what I'm reading- and that will be what we need for all the other titles to start working correctly. Is it possible to install a second sdk in another folder? Perhaps manually set the current service and just turn it off, then install 0.7 and toggle between them? Is there a firmware upgrade along with the new sdk?

if on schedule, the HTC vive at the back end of this year, and the oculus rift in the 1st quarter of next year.

I have a DK2 and have been gaming on it regularly since july last year, however I still want the retail version out as much as the next person.... however this is not the 1st time VR has been attempted to bring to market, and previous attempts have failed due to the hardware just not being up to snuff, and side effects like nausea etc.

Getting rid of these side effects takes time, as well as getting a quality product out there, but at the same time waiting to the tech to be affordable. This time I really want VR to stick (and I am confident it will) but if them taking an extra 6 months or so to get it right helps, then I think it is worth waiting.

For many people they already think VR will be flash in the pan, and at best will give VR 1 shot, and if it makes them feel ill or does not work 100%, many will just reinforce their position that it is a crappy gimmik and they will not look back therefore imo they need to get it right 1st time.

this real'y disheartens me because i'v tried playing without the rift and frankly it's just a flat two dimentionel console game which i could not play , there's just no realism that way .
i'm not far off becoming elite , been working hard to get there but because of this news i really don't know if it's worth continuing with it , without rift support the future of the games dead for me .

Same for me too. Can't get the DK2 working in Windows 10. (AMD before people start linking "how to" threads). I have totally lost interest in playing because of this. Was Windows 10 a big surprise for hardware and software developers? I heard about it ages ago.

i have decided i am sticking with SDK6 and windows 7 for now. ED and the rift is just that good!... Dont get me wrong, it is not ideal but so long as oculus rift is supported long term i can wait till xmas if i have to on this set up.

it aint gonna stop me poking them now and then however to "get on it" as it were :)

Lots of game devs working on VR projects are putting things on the back burner until the dust settles at the moment. Windows 10 has a new driver model for games, the Oculus SDK is changing how it interacts with the system and video card drivers have their VR support in beta at the moment. This all means that any code you write today could be broken tomorrow. And that holds true for every day from now until all of that stuff is settled. Frontier is correct not to waste time updating every SDK. Elite works fine with 0.5 at the moment, stick with that for now if you want to play Elite with your developer kit hardware.
I can say this because I've put my own VR projects on the back burner due to the issues listed, and I'm not even writing my own engine.

I'm running SDK 0.6.0.1/Windows 10/AMD R9 280X reasonably smoothly. Just some stutter (still) in supercruise. If you are interested I could post a walkthrough of what I tried.

Thank you, nice of you to offer. The best I have done after multiple installs/uninstalls is the light to stay on the Rift, but with a black screen. Gave up in the end.

From Oculus:

However, as a result of these updates, the 0.7 runtime won’t support applications built with 0.5 or earlier, including all content built with Unity 4.x. This means the majority of existing Rift games and applications will need to be updated to 0.7 (or at least 0.6.0.1) to work with the new 0.7 runtime.

Indeed! The only reason I went with E:D instead of pledging on Star Citizen is because of the Oculus Rift.

Well, it's good of them to let us know that updating breaks it (nVidia - take note!) so I'm happy to hold off upgrading until they move forward and it's the same with the other OR game I play, Asset Corsa. They stopped developing gameplay features until they know which way the wind is blowing which causes no end of grief for playing that properly so think yourselves lucky that we've got a fully playable experience at the moment.

No doubt once CV1 comes along (I see it's gone from being a Q1 release to being Spring '16, that gives them until May next year) then all the software houses will be in like Flynn. With FD being an early partner/adopter then no doubt they will be getting some early OR loving so they can be part of the CV1 release package. So for now it's a sorry to Bill and Palmer but I'm sticking with 0.6 and Windows 8.1 until next year so I can actually play the games I bought it for.

They don't need 0.7, 0.6.0.1 is compatible with 0.7 so if they wanted to they could upgrade to 0.6.0.1 but they're not even doing that. Seems to be very clear to me: There will be no more SDK updates until the consumer release so if you want to play in VR then you can't upgrade to 0.7 (due to not being able to roll back to 0.5 - unless you dual boot as suggested above).
