Oculus Rift - To buy, or not to buy

Hi

I'm tempted with the DK2... how long did it take to ship? what was the import costs?
T

I also experienced a very quick delivery, though I'm in the US: ordered Monday, UPS delivered Thursday. What is ridiculous is that craigslist locally is full of people trying to offload them for $500-800. And no warranty if you buy second-hand. No reason not to buy direct. I understand the argument to wait for CV1, but, I was sick of waiting, and this was the most fun self-xmas gift I could think of.

Like everyone has said, hold off until atleast the consumer release, it'll be much better at that point.

No way, like everyone else had said, the rift is insanely awesome and you won't go back after trying it.... even at the reduced graphics. Its just that much better overall. And for only $350 for the DK2 it's a no brainer (my video card was twice as much as that alone).

I had an awesome battle tonight with a much faster Viper and was able to lean forward and look up and behind my ship over the back to track him simply by "leaning around and looking up and back at the top of the cockpit"... try that with Track IR.

Since we have no idea when the Consumer version will come out, you guys are missing something incredible right now. Bring it out at your next family get together or party and watch people line up to try the roller coaster demos etc. It's hilarious.

If you don't have the spare $350, by all means, save for consumer, but if you have some disposable income for toys, GO FOR IT. You will not regret it.

Just tried a DK2 on a cool mech indie game in development. The immersion was absolutely fantastic for the most part.
However, like the image example above, the pixels really stand out. My vision periodically shifted from feeling very immersed to suddenly seeing all the red pixels more than others and would start to give me intense eyestrain. For ED I imagine the stars don't show as clearly, and the text would be very difficult to read consistently.
I moved money over to my credit card a few weeks ago to buy it and after trying it out I got both more excited and more skeptical due to the quality and gameplay endurance.
The only other justification for buying the DK2 for me is that I need to upgrade my reel and making an oculus functional unity environment would be an interesting take, especially since I need to get my skills into the modern day as I transition back into games and out of TV.
At least I tell myself that...ill probably go on welfare and just live in my oculus flying in space after about a week of owning it....

Indeed. When an enemy ship flies at me and past me, I'm following it with my view while I'm turning, instead of looking at the scanner to see where it's going. I do it without thinking. That's because it's like I'm really there. It's a sort of "virtual reality". ;)

The "rift" is pure garbage. The resolution is LOUSY and it is uncomfortable to wear for even short periods. It detracts from the game and is used mostly as something to brag about to cover up a bad and useless purchase.

I only play Elite in the rift. I love the presence and immersion you get. It makes me smile and I always come away feeling it was an awesome experience.
Yes I have to lean in to read some text occasionally as its not 4k.. however then again as has been said elsewhere when a 4k rift is available it will be the cost of the graphics cards that will be the issue not the cost of the rift!

P.S To run the current DK2 I would recommend having a high end graphics card otherwise it just ain't gonna be fun. FYI I'm running it with a GTX770 and most of my setting are on high

I had one for about 4 days before selling it. I found out having an IPD of 72 makes it unusable for anything but a short amount of time and there's no workaround for having a fat head unfortunately. I really enjoyed mucking about with it, and some of the demo's you can download are awesome, but the deep nausea, blurriness and to be honest crap graphics made me decide it wasn't worth keeping. When the proper one comes out with hopefully a much wider IPD setting I'm going to be all over it. Flying through an asteroid field with the OR is just..... amazing!

I don't say this at all. I say get it now.
Maybe wait till Jan 9th, after the next tech show, just in case of a HUGE announcement, but I really think that CV1 is at least another year away.
Trust me, I hope I'm wrong! I am ready for the real deal, but I certainly wouldn't put off an entire year of fun unless I simply couldn't afford to buy a DK2.
.
Mine arrived in 4 weeks.
I live in USA.

There is a workaround.
I have an IPD of 70mm, and first adapted my rift to accommodate my separation. Then after I had tinkered with it and shoved off some plastic, I found that there's a company that makes IPD separators for we humans who are on the outskirts of the 'human biometric norm'.
Check out VR-Gear
They sell their stuff through Shapeways.
I have since purchased the full set of spacers so I can adjust my rift for demos for friends.
They work flawlessly for me.

Personally I could not wait any longer, ordered direct from Oculus 17/12/14. UPS info reports I will have my new toy 22/12/14. That is way quicker than a tent I ordered from REI, btw I live in North Yorkshire the home of cricket and the original sheep shaggers :)

I also have 4 Screens which I use with a single Nvidia 970, I think it was worth a punt, will update after I have played a few games, Assetto Corsa, Project Cars, Rf2, Iracing and GSC ooh and not forgetting Euro truck 2 and wreckfest heheh

Congrats!
Merry Christmas!

Oculas rift.....died and gone to heaven...well nearly.

Ok

To be honest I was more excited than a little kid at Christmas. Not sure if the £303 quid was money well spent or a total waste.
I can confirm for my play style the DK2 in actual use is better than all of my expectations, simply blow my mind.

My 3 identical monitor setup is now for sale and I shall revert to my 2 previous monitors of 27 and 24 inch and stick to DK2 for elite and all of my driving games.

Well worth it, as a Yorkshire man I don't like wasting cash.

Driving Laguna seca and taking the corkscrew my stomach moved.......it was that good :)
Resolution not as sharp as a good monitor but still good enough to play.

Hell as an old coming from ZX 81 through electron, oric Atmos, Dragon , Speccy 48k, C64 Amiga i386, if you are on the fence take the plunge you will not be dissapointed. Doubt you will loose any money as 2nd hand units sell for more on ebay..work that one out.

Anyways see you in space commander.....or in iracing ta ta for now.

(please god release a groinal attachment, just don't tell the wife)

How bizarre I had to edit my post due to one word J E S U S...... which I placed in front of: it was that good.

Bet I can say muhammad

don't forget the average human wears ear phones while playing with a rift this cuts them off from the surroundings completely and makes it very easy to sneak up and bludgeon them.

result: free rift and head phones.

all you need now is a friend who is not in two minds about it and owns some head phones ;)
