Oculus Rift - To buy, or not to buy

oculus rift question

they said ED has a little loss in the graphical sharpness or whatever over OC, is that because of the lower resolution on current models? and will the game be as sharp as on PC's at max settings once we have the screens in the higher end CV models?

if so ill prolly get an OC then, right now im conflicted between awesome VR and being able to see the little scratch marks on my windshield from all the little ships i had to go through blocking the letterbox

Right now it sucks. Its like 3D movies which also suck. Maybe in 2-3 yrs it will be viable. The people who say its good aren't credible and just want to justify an expensive purchase and BRAG that they have a useless gadget.

Probably the funniest post I have read on here since I've joined.. Now replace 'funniest' with 'the most stupid and narrow minded'

You can easily spot posts from people who either don't own a DK2 or have never tried it.

I think a lot of misunderstanding exists over the DK2. The resolution is 1920x1080, you can also run the game at max settings (I only keep bloom on low)

Putting aside the fact that everything is true to scale and you are actually inside the ship first person (not looking at an image of a 3D cockpit) For me, what makes it so surreal is that you can make out all the little details in 3D. For example, the scratches on the Cockpit glass in the Cobra, it looks like an actual 30ft piece of glass in front of you, just like when you drive your car, except it's not a car, you are sitting in a massive space ship.

Another example, in the cobra on the overhead panel, you can see a large blue panel. I can get out of my seat, walk over to the panel on the roof behind the chair, look up, lean in and read what it says.

AUX UNITS 1 to 4 SYS CON DEP CLL. It's like walking around the bridge of a ship

It's really the only way to explain it. The lower "sharpness" is due to the space inbetween the pixels causing the "screen door effect". It basically looks like you're seeing the world from a screen door ;). Once the CV1 is released, and the effect is gone, then it will be sharp.

Also, do NOT expect to be able to run Elite on max settings. Keep in mind that you are essentially having the game engine render twice (each camera is at a different angle), and you will need to render at a minimum of a constant, or very near constant, 90 FPS. Estimating the specs of CV1, from 60 fps to 75 fps, you will see anomalies with the game (stuttering). Below 60 FPS, and you'll get physically sick.

In VR.. FPS > Graphic Fidelity

You do need a powrful machine to run it maxed. My rig is overclocked to a crazy 5ghz, but my card is only a 780TI. I don't have any issues, even in asteroid fields.

I had the DK1 and now I have the DK2. Playing ED with the DK2 is a whole world above a monitor, even with the lower res and framerate. That being said, ED is about the only game worth playing with it. Alien:Isolation is pretty cool too.

Buy the DK2 if you don't mind paying again for a CV1 within a year. If you can swing both do it. If you can only buy one, then wait, because CV1 will be much much better and you'll be bummed if you can't buy it.

As others have said its a very subjective thing if you would be happy with the dk2 and I would advice to try it somewhere before or wait for cv1. The reason of this is a lot how we perceive a image is post processing inside the brain. The brain adds missing information it knows about from similar experiences. So if you are lucky your brain knows how the text should look like and the text looks better and some of the screen door is filtered out by the brain when not focussing on it. How good this works is a very individual thing so you will only know after testing it by yourself.

I had a DK2 for a few months, but sold it recently. It's a great device, and the moment you get into it for the first time will be a memory you remember for the rest of your gaming life. It's an amazing experience, one that can't be described adequetly to those who've not experienced it.

But...

The there are faults. The FOV is too narrow, the RES is too low, the Lenses are a bit poor, and have a "sweet spot" where vision is clear (outside of this spot, it's blury), the lenses dont allow for unusual IPD (so if you have an IPD of less than 60 or one larger than 68, you're in for eyestrain and a headache from squinting) and it's a demanding peice of Tech (I got an i7 4770k, @4.00, with a GTX 970 OC and it barely runs stable (@75hz) on medium to low.

So I'd say try get one cheap, second hand, and sell it on when you've experienced it. Or just wait for the CV.

Also don't forget the DK2 should work just fine after the release of CV1. There will be plenty of people out there who will buy a used DK2 on the cheap. You may even scrape a cheeky £100 for it to help fund the CV1.

I have a Dk2 and it is amazing. That said I still play in 2D a fair amount.

I think it comes down to money. If you have the spare cash and cant wait get it :D if you dont have the money spare wait a while.

It is good to see friends and family totally shocked when they put it on for the first time.

I'll cross post this here.. came from another thread I posted in the VR section.. but before I do, please do not listen to the people saying the Rift needs a 4k display. It does not need a 4k display, it needs a custom 1440p display with varying pixel densities across the screen. This is what (I believe) the Crescent Bay demo is using.

The cost of a custom made 1440p screen is cheaper (currently) than a non-custom 4k display. I honestly don't think we'll see a 4k display in the Rift's future (in any release version), at least, in what we think of screens today. I have a feeling that CV2 will be using a curved display, and who knows what resolution / magic that it will have.

Anyways, without further ado:

I was thinking about this yesterday - the Rift is the first genuine use case I've seen for a curved LED or OLED display, and for displays that are higher than about 300DPI. Thinking about it, if each eye was surrounded buy a curved very high res display, I think 1080p per eye would give a really good level of detail. This would also give a wider FOV - sometimes you're conscious of looking through a letterbox with the Rift. Oh, but what a letterbox !

Re Dr Zachary Smith

In today's English, "You can" often means "One can". It doesn't always mean "Everyone can" or "Specifically you can". I understood Bob's response to my question, and it was appreciated. I thank you for your feedback, but you're acting unnecessarily rude, in my opinion, and somewhat off-topic. You say you "had to point out" the grammatical error, but you really didn't 'have' to at all .....

This .... have some rep :)

Just to quote on a previous post I made...

I know a lot of players are saying, hold out buying the DK2 cos the consumer version will be out and it will be so much better.

This is my feelings on that..

I've just got hold of the DK2, for me I was thinking how much money would the consumer version cost over in the UK and how long you could be waiting for release, as at the moment cheeky sods on ebay are selling them for £400-500 each ,,,, I got mine direct from oculus for £220+P&P, and it took 6 days for delivery.

Some how when the consumer version does come out you won't be able to get them direct, and I have a funny feeling you will not be able to get it for less than £400 from any other retailer over in the UK.

So I'm not going to spend that kind of cash on VR when I can get it now for under £300.

It's still a great experience, and Elite is amazing

So what I'm trying to say is that you could get and experience the DK2 for less than £300 now, or wait however long and knowing the UK market, you could have to pay maybe £600 or more. Or I could be wrong :S

That's without having to upgrade your PC to run a 3k screen at 120fps.

So do you experience it now? or do you wait and maybe find out you can't justify the cost later?

I chose now :D

powerful machine will be no problem for me XD

recently went to the casino and spent 8 hours on super-conservative roulette bets and walked out with 12k, and with no debts or bills to pay, most of it is going to upgrading my aging computer

I keep reading people talking about the Oculus Rift, in the sense that once they try VR, they never want to go back.

I'm torn whether I should get one now, or wait until the release version is out.

Am hoping to have feedback from those that do own one. Buy, or wait a year...?

If you buy it now, you are going to pay for it twice because you know you will want the consumer version with the higher resolution and better drivers when it comes out. If you have the money to burn go ahead, but I see it as a waste of $300.
