Oculus runtime 0.5 or 0.8?

Hi all.

I've been running my rift on runtime 0.5 and it's been ok if not a bit juddery, I did use 0.8 for about half an hour until strangely it all went slow and I could not get it fixed again.

I was running Win 7 with a gtx970 but now I've upped that to a 980ti with a brand new SSD. Not ready for Win 10 yet as I'm still hearing about issues with ED....

I do not want want to mess with Nvidia settings, overclocking etc as last time I struggled to get it back to normal even after resetting to defaults. It's also not my expertise! The best I can stretch to is changing my HUD colour, so not really interested in SweetFX either (sorry), and the runtime switcher failed on me too.

What I'd like is simple 'plug n play' where others can see what's going on in the rift, and to possibly use other demos and games on it too. Ideally I'll be getting Alien Isolation when I can afford it. I also use obs for the second display FYI.

Which runtime would you recommend for the best experience overall?

Thanks all, great community here and you've all been really helpful with my ED story so far...!

0.5 runtime if you are only playing ED in VR. Super smooth even at super sampling of 2300 ish

If you have other VR titles that need runtime higher than 0.5 then you will either have to use the switcher or dual boot (as I do)

Edit : I like dual boot. I have a dedicated Win7 boot for ED only and my primary boot is Windows 10 for everything else.

Thanks Catanonia. That's actually a great idea- dual boot. Do you run 2 drives? I need to wire my hdd back in (1 set of leads), but instead of erasing I might leave it on runtime 0.8...

yeah.
0.5 runs fantastically for me, except for a weird decalibration of the positional tracker over time, which can be easily resolved by obscuring the tracker for half a second.
0.8/SteamVR runs okayish, but is by far no comparison to 0.5 in extended.

That's on an i5-3470/GTX970/16GB RAM (no SSD)

You should get that checked out. Oculus replaced my DK2 due to similar issues.

Other than that, if you use win7, 0.5 is the way to go, SteamVR sucks balls, don't use it unless you have to is my advice. The runtime switcher allows you to have the best of both worlds.
