Oculus runtime switcher... Finally setup today - Great!

The first versions of this fan-made switcher were too confusing for me to attempt to setup. I checked out the instructions for most recent version (V3) and decided to give it a try...

https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/3paivl/rtu_package_to_switch_between_oculus_07_and_05/

I have runtime 0.7 installed for about a week which meant no ED.

After following the instructions in the above link I am now able to switch between .5 and .7 without uninstalling or rebooting.

Just run the .5 file in admin mode and set extended mode and you're in!

When u come out of ED be sure to set the oculus off extended before u run the .7 file as admin.

Apparently the V3 works with .8 runtime too without any modification.

Well, looks like I can give the new Vorpx Version a try and soon play Fallout4 and Elite on my DK2! Thank you for the Info!

Edit: Is this only for win10? Anyone tried with Win7?

I was having a hard time deciding whether I should buy Vorpx. I made a friend buy it last year and he couldn't get anything to work on it, Ralph doesn't allow refunds so it was a big risk. I finally purchased it last week when the latest 0.9 version came out and it has turned out to be a great purchase. I am 100% sure my friend couldn't get it working because at the time he was running a pirate windows 8. He's since upgraded to legit 8 but sold me his oculus. My win 8 is legal and I know vorpx has quite good DRM in relation to its key. The vorpx 0.9 interface is great. Very well designed. It comes with a small movie theater virtual cinema where u can sit and play games or watch 2d/3d movies. It works with VLC and MPC-HC (nightly version updated for vorpx). It's the best image quality movie theater I've seen for Oculus. I've tried a whole bunch of games... GTA V works extremely well (need to run flawless widescreen with its GTA V extended FOV options). Arma 3. Even tried Battlefield 3 which was quite playable but bad game design means that even when you increase FOV to 120... that only works on foot. When u step into a vehicle the FOV is default. Skyrim and Fallout 3 look amazing with vorpx. The head-tracking works really well in all of the titles and vorpx has a really well designed in-game menu (del key). One word of warning though... Took me a few days to discover that my internet security (Comodo) was preventing vorpx 64 bit hook from running which meant BF3 and GTA V wouldn't start in VR. I had to get rid of comodo completely. I tried Zonealarm firewall and that was even worse because it stopped oculus runtime working. Right now I'm just using windows firewall.

Thank you! Fallout 4 looks like it's gonna be great. I'll have a pint of whatever you're having.

Couldn't get it working on 7, when I switch to sdk5 it can't detect hmd

I wasn't aware of win 7 issues but have no personal experience of that. I'm on win 8.1.

How about this? He says he tested it with win7, I'll try it when I got the time!

https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/3ngmju/oculus_runtime_0607_switch_no_uninstallreboot/

Hopefully it will run on 7.

Please be aware that the Oculus control panel says "HMD not detected" when u switch to .5 but it is actually working.

You can put the octopus into extended and play anything that runs on .5 sdk.

This is making it to the compendium. Can you confirm if you are on windows 10?

The reddit link title for the switcher does say windows 7/8/10 so you would expect it to be working (hopefully).

I use windies 8.1

Thanks buddy, I'll give it a whirl. Haven't needed it for a while as Elite was all I played but now I'm getting really into space engine and I'd like to see if the newer builds improve the framerates there

Well good news is it works fine on Windows 10. Bad news is space engine doesn't support it. Euro truck sim2 does :)

Not sure what other games would though, any suggestions?

Space Engineer works via Vorpx and vorpx works best on 0.7.

Eurotruck 2 is 0.7, Trackmania Stadium = 0.7, Steamvr now also works via 0.7 I believe. Mind: path to thalamus enhanced edition.

If STEAMVR has been updated to 0.7 it would be a interesting question, when they'll finally implement the STEAMVR-Support they announced a short while ago... this would mean that Elite is playable with 0.7 too...

Actually it looks like steamvr is still pretty broken although it does detect and show oculus is enabled. The big-picture menu is screwy. I've been playing Half Life 2 and TF2 on steamvr via the free virtualdesktop.net. First start virtualdesktop. Then start steamvr, then load HL2 via steam big-picture or virtualdesktop and press F8.

Basically steamvr works better through virtualdesktop. Virtualdesktop runs on 0.7.

You can forget Elite on steamvr. Doesn't work.

Never thought to try space engineer with the rift, is it any good? I might buy it. Any other games?

Maybe I'll get my VorpX out again and try some of the games (last I checked most of them had FOV issues)

When did you last use Vorpx? Latest 0.9 version has a lot of new features!

I haven't tried Space Engineers but I know it's on the vorpx list.

You have to increase the FOV for every game u play on vorpx or else you get that awful zoomed-in look. Vorpx has the game optimiser so it can set the 120 FOV for many of the games but others you can set manually.

GTA V: Download the free Flawless Widescreen program which now includes GTA V profile to optimise FOV. The game looks very good on vorpx. The only issue is when you're driving, the mini-map is out of visible range. There is a mod for that or you can use the edge-peek when u want to view the map. Or you can play the game using vorpx virtual cinema.

Skyrim: Very good with vorpx! None of the nasty shadow problems I had with virieo perception and you can read the options menus clearly. Skyrim is excellent.

Arma 3: I used an online FOV calculator to manually set FOV and it runs very well. I was able to fly the chopper last night with freelook enabled.

Battlefield 3: You can increase the FOV on foot whenever you enter a vehicle the FOV is default. It's bad game design. Otherwise BF3 looks very nice on oculus.

Serious Sam 3: Very good with vorpx!

Metro 2033 and Last light: The game looks good but when you go outside the scenery can look a bit compressed. It's hard to explain. These two games take more effort to look good using the 120 FOV and in-game vorpx adjustment.

Bioshock Infinite: The 3d looks good but there is this odd stereoscopic thing going on when I move head. It can probably be fixed by changing some game setting.

Crysis 3: Awful. Although vorpx supports the game - it looks really weird. Your gun is too big and again the stereo image looks odd when you move your head. This is the worst game I've seen on vorpx.

Alien Isolation: I did enable the built-in oculus support but it didn't look good because the developer got the world scaling wrong. Tried it with vorpx last night and it looks a lot better. It's very playable now.

Leg end of Grimrock 2: Looks great!

On all these games I've found the vorpx head-tracking to be flawless. Much better than I'd expected especially after using the free alternative vireio perception.

The new virtual cinema on vorx .9 is amazing.

That's one of the things that's surprised me really. There doesn't seem to be any real FPS hit. There's no judder. With native VR games I often have issues. Last night I installed Euro Truck 2 and played the 64 bit version on 0.7 runtime and the judder was terrible. It reduced once I took down a lot of graphics. With games on vorpx I don't seem to have that issue. My GPU is old (680 but it has 145mhz overclock on core and 155mhz on vram). CPU is at 4.8ghz so that helps too but nevertheless - Euro Truck doesn't seem to run well and another one that's known for judder is DCS world. I've had to give up on that (even running it on minimum).

Ok you've got me sold. I'd only used VorpX for Skyrim, I have had similar findings too you - many scaling issues and FOV issues and weird compression issues. Going to give Fallout 4 a whirl tonight, that game isn't getting played in my house until its either 3D or VR

I couldn't get this to work properly (Windows 10, DK2, AMD 7970, latest drivers). I copied everything where I should and ran the 05 config as Admin. I could get it into extended mode and Elite Dangerous recognised it and allowed me to select Oculus (Headphones) but the Oculus display wasn't stereo. That is to say, each eye seemed to have a different (but the same) image on. The demo scene worked with extended mode though so I'm not sure what went wrong.

Anyone have an ideas?

If you use the VorpX control panel you can solve all those issues most of the time.
