Odd Essay

On sale, and reading that things were improving from release, I bought EDOdyssey a dozen or so days ago.

First, I like the HUD change to show percentage health and shield of your ship and target{ship}, nice QOL improvement. Also I bumbled into finding out planetary Autoland is a thing, so that’s nice to be able to use that when I am in the ship, not just when I recall it.

After I installed Odyssey, it auto logged me into the FPS game tutorial. I think I completed it, but it still made me select ‘skip tutorial’ to get out when I was “done”. I was underwhelmed, but it was a tutorial, and the default mapping was not what I had muscle memory for so I just had a hankering to fly my ship(s) in my space flight simulation game. Wow, they changed the UI, like, a ton. Don’t use text where symbols will do, I guess. At least there are ‘tooltips’ when they are selected. Again, (I am an olde man and its hard to train new muscle memory, so bad on me. Also it did not carry over my keymaps/joymaps. Also you cannot use a USB joystick(s) and a Bluetooth xbox controller mapping at the same time (sue me, I am most familiar FPSing on consoles).

So finally after a long while, I get to experience space legs outside of the tutorial. I select DISEMBARK and I get up from my pilot seat and walk to the back of my Krait2 to the door and climb down the ladder. Oh wait, I am confusing a video I saw one time. I mean the screen went black for a second then the view changed to some big room. Finally, the majesty of one of the Coriolis station interiors, this thing has got to be massive, like ME Citadel or B5 or DS9. I can’t wait to ride in one of those tunnels you see when docking.

Hey, there’s my ship behind me, maybe I can, take the stairs back up? No? Well looks like something like capsule elevators over the other direction, lets go the the grande concourse, I hope I don’t get lost, lol.

Alright, looks like they dialed the ugly stick back a little, I am not REPULSED by the NPCs milling around, Nice job FDEV. So it’s a mini-mall. Everyone that will talk to me is either trying to sell me something, or get me to do something illegal, ohhhhkaaay, so just like the mall (I kid, do malls still exist though?). Not a lot to do in the mall, I don’t really need to hire transport (yet…) and I own all the ships I want right now (no new ships?), so I guess I will buy some suits and guns and stuff.

There’s a grade 2 suit, I guess that’s better, so lets buy that. And a grade 2 gun, whatever grade means, so lets get that too. I am a multibillionaire, so mostly I don’t care what the stuff costs, like batman that way, but if I remember, even outside LYR space a sidewinder is like $30kcr. This gun and suit I just bought are like 20 sidewinders, they must me aaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwweeeesoooome! Lets head down to the planet below and try this out.

A settlement, that’s new, I’ll land nearby. Correction, apparently, I’ll AUTOland nearby, nice. I’ll just walk right in, the commando at the door seems friendly, didn’t give me any trouble … Aaaaaaaaaand somehow I have attained critical injuries and lost consciousness, huh? I wonder how much the rebuy will be. A fine? A fine for what? Not submitting to a scan? What does that mean? In ships they just scan you and you do whatever, I’ve never submitted to one, they just happen. Oh, I’m in jail? But the doors are not locked? Whatever, how do I get to my ship?

Its not here? That’s new. I guess I’ll have to charter a taxi. A taxi that is not fast travel, like how they got me here. I ride in an adder (always an adder) in real time to a station, 4 jumps away.

Well, lets try again, I guess, back to another settlement. You won’t get me this time, commando, I’ll stand right here for my scan. In fact, I’ll scan you at the same time, fair and square. Oh that’s a fine as well, I cannot scan you, like I can scan any thing and my ship and its OK, but not here, wait, you are shooting me for it? And again, back on the prison ship. I log off, I don’t have time that night to ride along again.

Sigh, Can I go back to just horizons, or is my save irrevocably tied to odyssey now?

Thank you for attending my TED talk.

You also might consider, if you'd like to 'have a go' with EDO, asking if anyone might come along and hold your hand (no, not literally, @Bottom Hat !), watch your back, and show you the ropes a bit ( No BH, not those ropes ).

There are a few of us lurking in the forum who'd be pleased to offer some help.

This is a very good point OP. You have to be careful with me and anything that can tie you down, up, or horizontal. You just know that something will end up going akimbo.

After 2000 hours, I still learn something new every day about the ship gameplay.
When I started playing Odyssey at release (in its poor, poor condition), it took me a couple weeks just to get to grips with its basic concepts, and the following months have been a matter of learning new stuff, refining techniques, discovering which ship and loadout best fit my on foot errands and I am always looking forward for more.

If you are familiar with the complexity of ED, it would be naive to expect Odyssey to be plug and play.

What I would suggest, is that you give it a few more tries, knowing beforehand that you're not going to master anything within the first day of play time.
If even then it doesn't work, you will be always free to revert to Horizons, seamlessly.

I don't think you have anything to lose, but much to gain, although in the end I appreciate it's all down to personal preferences.

May you find what pleases you best.

For the foreseeable future you will still have the option to launch into Horizons mode, yes.

But just FYI, you can also keep playing EDO and just not get out of your ship. The on-foot gameplay is entirely optional, but with EDO you get atmospheric planets, a second SRV model, etc etc. Plus by not going back and forth, you'll have less hassle keeping your bindings working.

The best bit of advice given is find a mentor. Someone to talk you through stuff via messages and then take you with them on missions. Voice comms is very useful.

Getting killed as a "newbie" is so easy in Odyssey. Put a foot wrong and security sending you to purgatory is a learning experience. With the scanning, at least these days you get a really "in your face" warning that you are about to be scanned, so you can stop.

There are stories of the early days, of CMDRs jumping between buildings, up or down, and getting a scan warning just after setting off. And getting shot for non compliance.

Thank you for the helpful replies and offers of assistance. I was just venting about expectations versus reality, i.e. ship interiors missing and disfunctional gameplay. The community of players is what elevates this game beyond its flaws.
