Odd performance on new Lenovo Legion 5, 17", RTX3070, Ryzen 5800h laptop

Is the mode option changing anything other than fan speed? Better cooling should never hurt performance/boost behavior, but incorrect power tuning absolutely can. If the higher modes are also higher TDP/boost targets, it's possible that they are counterproductive, perhaps by producing more heat than the increased fan speed can cope with, or simply allowing boosting into less efficient ranges that then need to be throttled back sooner. Hard to guess without more information.

Best answer I heard so far. 🙂 Other youtubers have confirmed this same oddity though. I've discovered 2 issues since. One was that a the Lenovo Vantage app requested an amd chipset driver update (which I've been unable to roll back) that actually made performance worse, confirming your thought, that it may in fact have been running too hot. And second, as we all know, some games are more cpu dependant than others, and Far Cry 5 doesn't seem to utilise the cpu optimally.

But as mentioned, others have found that the different modes yield no actual gains in games, apart from added heat and noise.

I'll try to elaborate further at another time.

Here's a good confirmation of the odd behaviour. I suppose the ryzen 5800h is total overkill in this laptop, and as I understand it, the different modes primarily boost cpu. Other factors are controlling the game performance:

Anyway, I've updated the cpu as Lenovo requested, which makes game performance worse, and subjectively a few degrees celcius cooler. I guess it's better in the long run. :) And the laptop is plenty fast for me, running all games in ultra, 1080p, smoothly.
