Odissey Performance on PC

Or an alternative mission wrinkle UI box will pop up, from a rival company :D
I might not be able to leave the office room because the door glitched out.

Uncomfortable silence ensues while waiting for the Facilities team to deploy a hotfix.

Or you trying to hand your boss something, only to not know how the Give_Boss_Coffee_Cup UI object works :D
Or it doesn't actually do anything despite pressing the right button.

Or it takes so many clicks that the coffee gets cold in the meantime.

This stuff writes itself!

I think I can confirm, most FPS drops and bad textures happen once Galaxy Map is opened.
It does something in BG for long.
In my case loged in station -> all is ok. Opened Galaxy map -> ship "lost details", lifts has no textures etc.

Is this the Odyssey equivalent of the Beyond 3.3 "fully generating all the planets in the background to place geological sites" thing, I wonder.

Somebody writes about a workaround for the performance issues currently, maybe you want to give it a shot?

Reddit
Nah, this is related to Horizons customizations. We were changing files GraphicsConfigurationOverride.xml with HUD colors etc. In Odessey it got +1kb of extra options to set.

Reddit fix didn't make a difference for me.

GPU driver update provided a marginal (<5fps) improvement, and I'm not even confident there is a difference.

G-sync is a life safer for me as it smoothens out a lot of the jankiness. Still seeing 40-50fps in concourse and about the same in settlements. I.e. the key areas of EDO gameplay.

PC is nicely warm so no longer need central heating I think. Silver linings etc.

I only had a quick 10 mins before bed last night - just enough time for the tutorial...
I'll certainly play around with it more...but...
Can confirm - my frame rate was garbage!
Fingers crossed for a hotfix! (Of some variety)

Aside from a new video card, I've not upgraded my gaming PC in about 8 years. I'm running an i5 with 16GB RAM and my only "modern" component is my GeForce 2070.

I turned down my graphics a little bit, but I'm getting a solid 50-60 fps, capped at 60, running at 4k.

For me, the game's performance is beating my expectations.

Ive tried it and it seems to work. But what i experienced for now was that when i was opening the system map, my fps went back to 19, then I relogged and it was stable again. Only tested it on a station atm.

in the Alpha, ALT-TABbing out of the game fixed FPS drops caused by the galaxy map (or other menus). I couldn't test it myself, stuck at work, but it would be faster than a relog (that might put you outside the current instance)

I have played the alpha until phase 3, didn't get to play at phase 4. On my desktop R7 2700X, GTX 2080, 16GB ram on a 4k resolution I had serious drops of fps, something down to 20 fps. When I switched to 1080p the boost in fps wasn't that good either, it was inconsistent between 35-55 fps. I am talking about new planets, stations etc.

Did the performance improved in phase 4? I wonder if we will get smooth experience, because a first person shooter with low frames might be a game breaker.
Yeah 6900 XT is now doing less than half of my originally locked 60FPS, while in first person lol. At times it's more like 24FPS. Especially on-foot conflict zones, but even just walking around some stations.

The given specs should work though, and not in the future but now. They didn't in Alpha, which was no problem. But if the game still runs poorly on indicated specs that is not at all good no matter what happens in the future.

People paid now, so FD should deliver now.

Can you remember when this ever happened since ED launched?

Yeah see this? This is unacceptable. The world's most powerful consumer GPU can't run DLC for a 7 year old game at 4K. The 3090 is literally marketed as a 4K card.

what Fdev.
Just because you spend a lot of money on your computer or someone in marketing produces a wet fart does not guarantee you anything.
In EDH a 3090 can push 45+ Fps in worst cases in 8(!)K at max details.

I noticed I had 20% of my i7 in use, so I switched AA to MLAA which should be done on CPU + 0.85. Rised fps from 7 to 25 in station and something like 40 in space (down from 120+ in Horizons).
Total CPU usage is a pretty worthless value. With a 4C/4T CPU 20% load could mean one core is completely loaded.
Also AA is calculated on the GPU, it usually does not have any relevant impact on CPU performance.

I don't really agree with this to be honest.
Imho planetary surfaces look stunning in EDO and are a vast improvement over Horizons.

The price is way too high though, those fps losses are insane.

It’s worse because the graphic settings (low - ultra) don’t seem to make any difference in performance. It’s all about resolution, but running 1080p on a 4K native monitor looks like crap, even with ultra. I’d rather run 4K low or medium rather than 1080p ultra but unfortunately going from ultra to low only gives single digit frame improvements.

You have people with low end cards getting decent performance at lower settings, but really high end cards are not getting the performance you’d expect from them at the higher settings. The performance seems to scale very poorly.

Please don't complain too much about performance. They will just nerf the graphics like they did after Horizons came out, where we had to live with dull beige planets.

If they “nerf” then back to Horizons I’d be fine with that. I’d much rather have sharp Horizon graphics and performance with Odyssey on-foot gameplay over this low-res (but highly detailed) slideshow. The performance tax is just not worth it.

The game is way too dark, still. The cockpit HUD seems mostly stuck on the lowest brightness setting, while the target reticule seems at normal brightness levels.

It's pitch black in most places unless you're very close to a bright star. And some of the PJs (tried the Azure one) look very different now, and not in a good way.

The more I play this, the more it feels I'm playing the Alpha still, just without the 50LY bubble removed - a lot of glitches and bugs that were in the Alpha are still present in this, and some new ones even got added. Basic stuff like using the Sysmap is a chore, not just UI wise but the lag is horrible and there's a 50/50 chance you get softlocked somehow.

I also can no longer locate the Pioneer suit skin for 2 out of 3 of my suits, but I have a skin I don't think I'm supposed to have (shiny green one for the Artemis). Other skins show up but they don't stick when I try to apply them. And the gimp suits seem to be missing 2/3 of the default colour ones that I seem to remember I had. Just one set now by the looks of things. I don't know what's going on with the cosmetics but I'm not touching any new items with a barge-pole until this gets stabilised.

My enthusiasm for this has really fallen off a cliff, I was genuinely excited over the past few weeks.

This wasn't ready for release, but here we are anyways. Guess I'll have to make the best of it but I'm not impressed.

Horizons (120FPS)

Odyssey (47FPS)

(Strange thing is, I was getting 27 FPS, then I ran Horizons to take that screenshot, then when I rebooted Odyssey, It was up to 47-50)

And it looks like you’re running an increased FOV in Horizons so even more rendering, and you’re still getting almost 3x the frames. Odyssey doesn’t look 3 times better, or even 2 times better, to be worth losing 2/3 of your FPS.

I can confirm that when sitting on the pad (number 41 so quite close to the entrance) the framerate dropped down to 50fps when looking straight ahead. Looking left or right and it recovers.

In EDH I haven't had those kind of issues since upgrading from my 4 year old laptop - and it actually looks worse in EDO now - flat colours, seemingly less or no environmental FX.
