Odyseey is on sale on Steam until April 21

Yes it's a separate install

Thank you!

Well, here goes nothing...

It was intended (just like Odyssey for consoles was intended), but we really don't know if it still is intended or not.
I assume so, otherwise if they do move forward with Odyssey client and leave Horizon behind, as they say they would, then people on PC will not be able to switch with the 2 versions "on the fly" anymore. I imagine that'd make some really bad complication down the road.
Since performances have always been the "only" big issue Fdev really aknowledged (with Braben letters) and non odyssey content performance are OK nowadays, I don't see what they wouldn't pull the plug on the merge. The biggest performance issues are for Odyssey content, but for people without the DLC that's irrelevant.

Plus it would probably help with sales, non DLC owner could land on planet, see the old plants like brain tree and think "oh noes I wish I could go outside and scan them !".

you can make that statement about literally any decision anyone makes about anything they've made a previous statement about.

I dont see them leaving pc horizons on it's codebase going forward long term because they can't cross-play in pc and horizons being on it's current codebase, it's effectively a separate platform that exists to appeal to players running what they consider marginal hardware. Those are fairly big negatives to maintain something they have so far only mentioned is a temporary situation that existed to address a problem that they no longer believe exists (to the level that warrants further work). I dont see much reason to think they've changed their mind on these plans. Especially in the face of a reduced userbase in pc, where fragmentation matters even more.

Well y'all can come back to this thread and leave a big "I told you so!" someday - not tomorrow, not next week, but someday, maybe, perhaps.

But now, right now, Horizons is separate from Odyssey, just like it should be :p

True, but that's no different than players who make statements about what they hope will be the future despite fdev saying the opposite. It happens every update, but they usually get laughed at when their hopes dont happen since they were told it wouldn't happen.

It should be expected that horizons will be combined with odyssey (code) and lose whatever "advantage" it has performance wise because that's the stated plan.
And all evidence seems to indicate they are inclined to reduce development cost and move forward from the "fixing" stage of the odyssey plan they outlined originally. Of which, the merging would be what follows.

You can come back to this thread and tell everyone "told you so" if the time comes. Nobody brags about being right when it's just following what was supposed to happen anyway.

So how do you get Odyssey to appear on the launcher? Both the original game and Odyssey were purchased through Steam, i just downloaded Odyssey, restarted and logged out of everything but i can't find an Odyssey option neither on steam or the standalone game launcher....

I bought the ED on steam, but start it from the frontier launcher. IIRC when I bought EDO on steam it took a few hours before it appeared in the launcher. Maybe wait a while?

Edit: But note that I also download everything through the Frontier launcher.. But I suspect the key would be to wait a few hours.

Thanks, i do the same usually. I never had that problem with a game before. I 'll wait till tomorrow before asking for a steam refund.

Another way of looking at is frontier face the choice of losing the horizons players vs having a fragmented pc playerbase.

Especially since losing that playerbase will also cost reasonable development time and have technical challenges probably impossible to solve (horizons only ships vs odd based on horizons planets? just make lasers like a music performance there?)

The graphics changes are not universally positive, and personally i'll start again on console (already own a copy there, with ship kits purchased no less) rather than jumping to something worse just because of corporate randomness. I've always been happy to represent myself with this game, not be a cheerleader to either the game or frontier.. to me horizons is better than than the average of the pro's and cons of odd. Its that simple.

I'm on Steam/PC and my launcher now looks like this:

I haven't played yet, though. Still don't know if my EDH settings have been messed up.

For what its worth, i've enjoyed Odyssey even during the buggy launch. (its still buggy and needs more optimisation, but its much better than 6 months back)
While its on sale, if you enjoy Elite i would recommend anyone take advantage. If you dont like it, at least you got it on sale.
But if you want to continue with what is to come 'story wise', it seems that Odyssey is the place to be.

I think the communication that you've bought it on steam takes a bit of time to arrive at frontier, thus it will take a while before the frontier client presents it as a download. But I'm really just guessing, it was just my experience..

they did it with the console players

Back them up, or even better save it as a specially named preset. Like that it's just a preset that you can load, even if something broke in the defaults. (this has to be done outside of game by copying and editing files), but once done you can feel pretty safe.

But for horizons... oh wait.. shoot you got me. /bow

Maybe not.. to keep console players, they would have had to spend money paying developers make the console version. To get RID of horizons players, they need to spend money paying developers to allow horizons only players into the odd client.

I can't believe anyone ever doubted horizons would be staying around :p

Also it looks like frontier have started the marketing for 3 frontier foundry (publisher only) games coming out soon... they have trouble keeping focused on one launch typically so i think handling the fallout of another elite community explosion would be the last thing they want to deal with right now.

It is a shame that you are basically forced to buy Odyssey from Steam because the Frontier price is always more expensive. I would rather support Frontier but not by having to pay more than I would otherwise have to. I am not made of money! lol

For safety just make a copy of your settings folder
If you used the @STRONTIUM DOG method of back-up and profile creation, you should just select the profile, do the binds for On-foot section and be good with it
To back up your horizons binds and create custom profiles you can still use this - it will work even for EDO but you need to take into account that EDO binds are version 4.0 while Horizons are version 3.0 - so use the correct version in the binds file

Then, when/if you swap between EDO and Horizons you just need to select the correct profile (usually just for the on-foot section since this seem to default - or at least it used to)

One day later, Odyssey never appeared on either game launcher. Tried every suggested solution i could find, no interest in spending more time on the matter. I'm kind of old fashioned in gaming, i expect games to work, so i asked Steam for a refund. I may try again when the game is 5 euros, apparently that's what it's worth.
