I’m just back playing after a few years out and I’ve been doing a bit of Odyssey stuff - mainly power restore missions to unlock the engineer and to farm mats.

Question I have is I find certain Data Materials are very rare, like say Chemical Inventory which you need to engineer bigger suit storage. Are there particular system types or states that certain materials are more likely to be at, either at settlement data ports or mission rewards?

I managed to bag a Level 3 Maverick suit from a backwater outpost which was a result though

I'm not sure that I've noticed a change in mission rewards depending on BGS state. But most data mats are available as mission rewards in packs of 5, though some might not appear in such large quantities. Just keep looking at the mission board until you find some mission giving you 5 Chemical Inventory.

I don't think state changes much but I think the settlement type does affect the range of data that drops.

Finding specific data is definitely the most frustrating aspect of Odyssey. The one you'll always need is Manufacturing Instructions and I'll make detours if I'm not doing urgent stuff to do missions that offer them. Restore missions are good for gathering data, MI tend to turn up in Industrial and Extraction settlements, there are some that only seem to turn up in Control centres, Settlement Defence Plans being most notorious and they also require a particular faction state making them very rare.
Financial reports appear in boom and bust states.
Two that I seem to go through a lot of are Operational Manuals and Combat Training Material.
Due to the low numbers they can normally stay on the Cmdr and not take up space on the Carrier or get sold off. This way there's a good chance the Cmdr or an Alt will have what I want when I want it.

I’m stuck on opinion polls, only ever found 1 so far. Checked a couple of anarchy tourist settlements but they were duds, only 1 data port in the bar and none in the attached dorms.

Anyone know a good spot?

I got mine in Fullerene 60. Can't remember which settlement exactly, but IIRC there are many tourist settlements there with 5 data ports.

I found it easier to gather required data from mission rewards, instead of slaughtering random settlements for nothing. At least you know what you get.
But it takes some time to find stations that offering suitable rewards.

I totally agree that missions is the way to acquire data mats but I don't think all the unlock mats are available as mission rewards. For instance I don't think I've seen OP as mission rewards, while there are occasional 5 x weapon test data, and quite many for 5x manufacturing instructions, mining analytics, etc.

Decided to focus on other stuff for now, been upgrading my Mav suit to G4 and now added extra backpack capacity mod to that and upgraded the laser rifle and kinetic side arm (I forget the names) a bit too. Done 1 covert theft job for the engineer - it went south but just after I disabled the alarms so just killed a few researchers and got away with it. It was at that awkward site that is a hydroponics style one where the power plant is a right old treck through the main building. Got caught in the power room where the alarm control panel was but luckily I’d turned it off before I got caught

I’ve never seen opinion polls as a reward. I do missions purely for data rewards and just fill my looting boots when I get the chance (power restoration jobs are great for mats looting and was how I got my one and only opinion poll so far) and trade for the rest
