Im a bit late with Odyssey so this has most likely come up already, but do I have to travel to Colonia area to open new engineers and is it really worth doing it?

If so, are there FC's that travel back and forth that are openly known to do this?

(Assuming you are talking about the Odyssey specific, Suit and Hand held weapon engineers.)
No, Colonia has a set of engineers that duplicate all of the upgrades in the Bubble.

Given you can't pin blueprints and upgrade without visiting an engineer, I don't think there is much of an advantage to having both, at least not like there is with ship engineering.

Both sets of Colonia Engineers (ship and on-foot) are generally better than the Bubble ones, because they offer more mods per Engineer and are usually easier to unlock. But there are fewer materials-farming sites.

If everything went alright with your game, you should've gotten the invitations automatically. The in-game Engineers option under your Ship panel will indeed list requirements that you have to actually be in the Colonia region to unlock them.

I'm a collector nut so I wouldn't mind unlocking everything. I'm a bit on the OCD side I suppose...
Time to fly out, again...lol

Yes and Yes

Suit engineers are easier to unlock in Colonia and unlike ship engineers are not bound to relationships you have to develop in the bubble to unlock their counterparts in Colonia.

Mat hunting is also significantly easier to perform in Colonia.

The Fleet Carrier Owners Club - FCOC runs a weekly shuttle service to Colonia and back. Check out their reddit page for schedules (you don’t need to join or install reddit for this purpose; should be accessible to read on a web page).

The FCOC’s Cmdr Olive_Oyl and his carrier Marching On Together were of great help to me in visiting Rosa Dayette to pay my unlock tribute and upgrade the battery on my suit, which I wasn’t prepared to do with the equivalent Bubble engineer due to excessive unlock grind requirements. Out to Colonia and back in the Bubble within a week, no space mad endless jumping required. Job done.

I can definitely recommend the carrier service of the Cmdrs Satriani (FC Sleeper Service) and OliveOyl (FC Marching on together), the carriers are usually scheduled to leave on monday morning from/to the bubble, arrival on tuesday.

Oh and nowadays you might be able to buy some of the data you need to unlock the Colonia engineers on various FCs so you don't have to hunt for it yourself.

You can give yourself a head start if you like by purchasing G3 grade suits and weapons. You have to travel around to find them and they cost more than the normal G1 but they are available.

Indeed you can but I've been out in Colonia for months and have not seen a single G3 suit for sale.
