Odyssey Exploration much more "Dangerous" than Horizons

My unfortunate story so far....

Deep in the black with my Exploraconda and 2 SRVs.

Have discovered many, many systems, scanned many planets and found a multitude of Biologicals.
Whilst on a planet, my SRV fell off a cliff, exploded and killed me. I was allowed to respawn in my ship which was orbiting the planet and continue on my journey.
Having made many, many more discoveries with my ship and 2nd (and now only SRV) I accidentally stepped on a Geyser which propelled me so far from the surface that when I returned there was nothing I could do to slow my decent sufficiently that I died on impact and respawned on my ship. My remaining SRV is now undetectable on the planet and is lost.

Have I have lost all of the exploration data collected each time I respawn?
Am I right in thinking that in Horizons I was "projected" into the SRV seat so I would only have lost the SRV if it crashed.
Does this mean that long stretches of exploring out in the black are now much more risky? Perhaps too risky?

As it stands I can't see that I can do anything else other than return to the bubble and rebuy SRVs. I feel I have wasted the last couple of weeks of gameplay :(

Any tips/suggestions (aside from "don't die") greatly appreciated!

See if there is a carrier nearby : EDAstro has carrier info, and EDSM as well. You may be able to rebuy a SRV on one of those carriers. And you can check to see if your exploration data is still there.

Why couldn't you relog when flying in a SRV? Also you could boost SRV to slow your falling if that was too fast to relog.

You should be able to find a fleet carrier in your sector somewhere using inara or eddb. The DSSA project put them out there:

You've not lost explo data if you died in the buggy. You might have lost your mushroom collection, but you can find someone's carrier nearby I imagine to buy a new buggy.

Look on the bright side, it was hilarious -i have done this and it really kicks arx. You can save your descent though with practice using the thrusters on the buggy - practice some base jumping or cliff-falling (yes I made up that term, but it explains itself).

You were always physically present in the SRV.

People just get confused because the fighters are telepresence.

Don't die was one of the top tips... but as you said not to mention it ;) but I do have some tips to avoid it in future.

Sad news: on foot death means the loss of all the genetic samples - so you have nothing to hand in. However, you will have exploration vouchers worth 2500cr for each discovery. You may still have those from after your SRV death, you may still have them registered on your ship from before the SRV died. It's not much consolation, but you may scrape something back.

Other tips - such as looking for nearby carriers have been mentioned. Read my guide to discover what else is dangerous out there: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/odyssey-biological-and-geological-guide.582693/ Lava Spouts can also kill you and your SRV.

If you get thrown up in the air deploy your shield. There have been tales that the shield helps to mitigate landing death. When falling, make sure to leave room in your thrusters for one last burst before you land.

Your shield will also help with Lava Spouts - though tests have shown that it can kill your shields in a matter of seconds, but it might be those few seconds you need to get out of there.

Finally - If it's credits you are after, exploration is the least profitable vs effort. It's not worth it for that alone. Enjoy the journey - take amazing screenshots and tell stories - then if you do die, you have at least enjoyed doing it, and others can enjoy it with you!

I'm not entirely sure how the codex discovery payouts work, but so far I got 50k for each first discovery (per galactic sector I believe) and something like 100-150K when I make the codex. And I'd say exploration pays out handsomely these days after the buffs, it's not so much effort as time spent.

Yes it does, but it's the CR/Hour rate. I don't think there is any other role in ED that is as slow as Exploration.

Oh I don't know, trading in a Hauler is less profitable per hour than exploration, especially if you "cheat" and use road to riches.
I think of exploration as primarily sight seeing with a few credits on the side to more than cover expenses, and that's not unwelcome when you're not in a hurry to get more credits and you enjoy travelling and seeing sights.
I spent 90 million credits and many many hours of "engineering time" to be able to get to places like this fast in a ship that can survive crash landings on a high G planet. Now that I'm really using the ship, I'm just not worried about credits per hour earned.

I'm with you on that on. Even though the Star of the East is only 42ly capable, she's all I need to enjoy myself, as the links in my signature attest!

You have all planetary discoveries and vouchers, same for codex. You lost the genetic data. Financially speaking that will be less than 1% of your trip's income, the only annoying bit is your xenobio rank won't increase.

Just find a deep space station or carrier, turn in your data, rebuy your srvs and continue.

Smuggling and piracy. :p

Seriously though, you need 25mil or whatever for a perfect DBX. You literally do one trip and you've earned all you ever need for all explo gameplay. Your insurance cost will be close to zero year after year, and there are no other expenses.

Relative to costs, exploration pays very well.

Wow, nice shots. "Heading towards dawn" and the rainbow effect is super pretty.
Much as I love the Anaconda, I can't get on with the slow turn rate in supercruise (and I do a lot of turning when exploring) and it's cumbersome for the planetary landings. I did a 17Kly round trip to try and like it. I'll keep the Anaconda for passenger and freight transport while blowing up pirate foolish enough to interdict.

Is it fun to fly? should be the first question to ask when exploring. Is it easy to land everywhere? quickly after that. Ships like the Asps (yes, both of them!), Diamondbacks (yes, both of them!) and Dolphin offer that with plenty range on offer. Way more fun than an explonda, which has become obsolete with engineers and FSD injectors/boosters.
