Odyssey is IMPOSSIBLE if you can't do combat! I've had enough!

Just curious … do you have idea of how many missions / hours that took?

Well, no idea on my side either, but you need to consider that for some restore missions i had to call the apex (or visit my ship) to unload my Maverick mid run.

For tradeable stuff, idealy you'd pick everything valuable than trade for what you need - especially valid for techs (pick every tech you can find and trade for Weapon Components, Carbon Fibre Plating, Tungsten Carbide, Titanium Plating)

What the videos didn't tell me was that even though I'm hidden on a roof they'd come up anyway and shoot you in the back.
NPC will not come to the roof to shoot you if they did not see you or hear you there. NPCs will come and explore the last location you were spotted, and that may mean they go up a roof if that is where they saw you and there are stairs for it, but if you get away from their sight and move away from the last area you think they saw you then you have a good chance to avoid them altogether. Remember settlement skimmers will report your location if you have been declared hostile, so keep an eye on them too.

If you want to get better at avoiding combat altogether I strongly recommend the stealth series by Stealthboy:

Especially at least the first 2 videos.

Here some exemples of mine:

And here a video where I avoid hostile NPC´s and hide after detection, in between alarms.

As a law abiding commander who has no desire to steal stuff or murder anyone, I sympathize with the OP as to Odyssey‘s material gathering game play. I’m not interested in FPS combat either, but do enjoy my space legs and walking around stations and on planet surfaces.

While I’m a long time stick and rudder man in both flight sims and real airplanes, developing an entirely new skill set and the reaction times required for efficient and competent on foot combat is just a little bit beyond me at this point, with 73 orbits of the real Sol on the clock. I’m not very good at it, having unsuccessfully tried the training mission numerous times, nor do I enjoy shooting people.

So I’ve done in Odyssey what I’ve always done in Elite. I play the game the way I want. Do the things I like and ignore the stuff I’ve no interest in. Everything I did in Horizons I still do, but now I’ve added exobiologist to the resume.

As to engineering suits, what do you really need to enjoy the game? One of the cool new game play features of Odyssey is Concourse Shopping! I do a lot of passenger missions. They take me to many different stations and outposts scattered about the bubble, all with a concourse and a pioneer supply. I’ve found and purchased 5 level 3 Artemis suits with various mods for my exobiology. And while not a warrior, my gun collection consists of at least one level 3 example of all available weapons, most with mods.

Don’t sweat the small stuff. Enjoy yourself and play the game the way YOU want.

Another console transferee who wiped a previous save;
I never did the 'masacre everyone' thing.
Almost everything came from abandoned settlements as there wasn't any point to stealing from a live one.
Usually Ext settlements.
I use an SRV to salvage what isn't nailed down.
I'm able to get power (and therefore defences) up before scavs arrive frequently so no combat actually occurs unless they're on the ground before I arrive.
Similarly with crash sites and smugglers caches I can pull up jump out grab what I need and be heading for the horizon before scavs flicker on the scanner.

I believe that the OP has been asked this question before. Essentially G5 fully modded suits are required so that he can last longer without resupply, jump higher and run further and race others iirc. Nothing less will do.

Damn, those plants can run fast and hide tens of kilometres away from the nearest place a SRV can get to.

In many ways, it is like wanting a top of the range sports car for the two mile commute to work when an inexpensive hatchback* will do the job.

Made the mistake of finding out what he thinks he wants...
Increased O2, increased battery, increased backpack and increased sprint/jump, and night vision. For exploration.
He thinks these are "essential". I think he hasn't a clue.

Yeah, I've told OP before that most of the suit mod he "needs" for exploring can be mitigated.
1) Night vision: Land of the light side of a planet
2) Increased battery: SRV or battery pack (artemis carries 3)
3) Increase sprint: Just rest for a few seconds when you're out of breath, the plants are not going anywhere
4) Increased O2: See point 2
5) Jump assist: The only mod I would say is helpful when the plants are a bit out of reach

Most suit mods are just a small QOL thing, not really necessary imo, especially for exploration.

You didn't give Frontier long to respond, did you?
Your last post about the same was only Tuesday...

And you got the same advice there too.

funny as always that a person buying Elite Dangerous, isn't into combat.
even though there is trade, exploration, it is a combat game.

that aside, also not required for anything in Odyssey IMO.

In my 3 accounts I did everything in only 1 account to upgrade weapons and suits.
long before I was finished I realized it was totally not necessary.
sooo, the other accounts only get upgrades if they can buy them, they are absolutely not needed for any reason.

in a game of trade, exploration, combat
I am a combat person, I do in game as IRL, IRL I do NOT want to fight, but if you force me to, I will drop a building on you and end the fight in an instant. I DO overkill, it is my style.
sooo, in Odyssey, you are in a soft squishy suit, do you want to die? No? then stay in your ship and your srv.
DO buy G3 suits and weapons though because if you do want materials and you have to get out of the srv, you do want to be prepared.
plasma long range rifle and plasma pistol are tops, no matter what grade
buy suits that run well.
buy suits that are stealth
you will die, there is no way around it. soft suit = death .
I can't tell you(I Can) how many things will kill you, many you would never have guessed could kill you. SOFT, really squishy.

BUT there are many missions that give materials and zero fighting required too. this is your best bet.
you can also explore systems and find many many abandoned settlements, these are usually more dangerous though because if you are there, scavengers WILL show up to hurt you.

then enjoy whatever it is you plan to do with that.

No, the most efficient way is to do restore/reactivation missions in settlements without fires

You can find plenty of those if you search for systems with factions in the required state that also own a lot of settlements

A useful thread although I still think the balance is off.

  • Used the search
  • Found a nearby system that qualified
  • Flew there
  • Picked up one mission (4 were listed but all were for the same destination so could only take one)
  • Mission upgraded to Threat 4 (Scavengers present) as I left dock
  • Flew to the planet (attempt 1)
  • Got interdicted
  • Aggressor ran away on 19% hull
  • Flew to the planet (attempt 2)
  • Landed
  • Took out the Scavenagers
  • Powered up the settlement and looted everything I could find
  • Returned to the station to collect my “reward”
Total time was about 45 minutes and I netted zero materials that were directly useful.

Repeated the mission again, same results except this time I nailed the interdictor before they managed to run.

Then spent about 2.5 hours with some fellow CMDRs running general “settlement looting” operations in an Anarchy system.

So, about 4 hours all told. I was able to trade materials with the Bartender such that I have the right stuff to G1 -> G2 a couple of weapons … so long as I find a couple of Weapon Schematics. Who knows how long that RNG will be.

Checked on the suit front … I need 10 Suit Schematics for my next upgrade - plus whatever else is required but the schematics are the big part ‘cause you can’t trade for them.

How many did I get from my above efforts?

1

So … that’ll be 40 hours gameplay that will be required to upgrade one suit? By one grade? And the next grade is 15 schematics!!

Never mind the actual mod requirements themselves on top of that to put something useful in the slots …

I’m sorry, that’s insane.

I will do another round of “lucky shopper” next Thursday … see where that gets me …

Where are you in the galaxy?

According to inara, this CMDR has 48 of them, so I'd be happy to donate 10. (probably acquired by looting lawful settlements, to each their own)
