A shame there's no gibbing in this game - that crash landing would have been spectacular!

I was then advised that I might need to Re install ED, which I finally tried yesterday. After 12 hours (67.9 GB) of downloading and verifying, I was informed that there was a disk error.

Sounds more like the OP has a HDD/SDD going bad without realizing it.

Check the drives for errors.
