Odyssey - Optimisation/Performance and UI (Galaxy & System Map) Feedback

There's been a few changes to the galaxy & system map recently that seem to be making the user interface worse.

When clicking on a planet (in the system map) the top right panel now comes up on it's own which is one less click but in some situations a panel on the right also pops up leaving only a narrow section in the middle of the screen available to select bodies when looking at the properties for various bodies.

In both system and galaxy map screens single clicking on a targetable object on the map will often target that item (rather than just selecting it) and the mouse movement goes from moving the cursor to moving the background until I click somewhere on the background to de-focus, then I need to re-select my intended object. This doesn't seem to offer any useful function and seems like an actual downgrade. I assume the UI is interpreting a very fast click bounce (unintentional double-click).

Once a route to a new system is plotted & I have jumped to the new destination I receive a pop-in notification in the bottom right of the screen that my route has been cancelled. I don't need to know this info at this point, and the word cancelled is unhelpful. That I am making the last jump in a series might be helpful but on the actual in-universe HuD rather than as a game notification.

One of the nice things about the old HUD was how little space was taken up by the vertical info-strip on the left, and that it always occupied the same consistent position. I didn't consider this to be a benefit before seeing the new UI but there is a clear downgrade there in terms of usability that seems to be getting worse as patches are released.

One of the common bugbears about the old UI was that the context-sensitive selection menu had grown and often got in the way. I like that the new UI attempts to address this, although the implementation has come at a heavy cost in other aspects (number of clicks & mouse cursor distance to travel). I like the click & hold to plot route idea, when the item is central on the screen it works well. I suggest a small key is added (in a way that allows an experienced user to hide or at least ignore it) that list other actions that that perform a common function on that item, effectively replacing the old context sensitive but intrusive menu with target/untarget, plot route/cancel route, bookmark/delete bookmark and view system map (view body on the system map)/return to previous map using user-mappable controls like (I use a mouse for these screens) left click, double-click, click & hold, right-click. Any other buttons or keys could be assigned based on player preference ideally.

There are some lower priority pieces of info that are no longer present in the galaxy map, the most obvious ones I regularly use are the name of friends (galaxy map) and the carrier owner (system map). I can usually figure out the friend locations from the comms panel of my ship HUD, and carrier owner is also available on another screen (left HuD nav target selection panel).

I think the changes to the Ship HUD (right panel, storage) are only additive & well integrated thank you, the changes to the crotch panel SLF orders page are a significant improvement on the old one too.

Greetings Commanders,

First of all, we’d like to thank all of you for supporting us throughout Odyssey’s development and at launch. For those of you who have access to the expansion and are able to play without issues, we hope you’re enjoying yourselves!

That said, we are aware of some commonly reported issues and will take this opportunity to address them. In this post, we’d like to specifically discuss optimisation and UI.

Optimisation and Performance

We’re aware that performance in Odyssey is varied according to PC builds and other factors. While many players are enjoying the game at the intended standard, unfortunately some are not.

If you are experiencing performance issues, here’s how to report them and include some especially useful information. Please send us as much information as possible to edoperformance@elitedangerous.com using the template below. To report any other issues, please go via the Issue Tracker as normal.

Please provide as much information as you can from a DXDiag report (see link for help)

Where were you in-game, and what were you doing? (Solo/Open, in Wing/group or not etc.)

Are you running Odyssey in borderless/fullscreen/windowed?

Are you running Odyssey in VR?

Do you have any other apps running at the same time?

Are you running any third-party shader suites?

In addition to the above, please send us your graphics configs. To do this:

1. Navigate to this file location: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics
2. Copy all folder contents to a ZIP file and attach it to your submission

We’d like to thank you in advance for submitting this information. Your reports will be invaluable in assisting our team and expediting performance fixes.

UI Feedback

We’re also keenly aware of feedback on several aspects of the updated User Interface in Odyssey. The comments on this topic have been followed closely since the beginning of the alpha phase and your feedback shared in our Alpha feedback forum has been gathered and collected. Your concerns over the ease-of-use and accessibility of these systems are being heard and passed to the development team.

While fundamental issues such as connection and performance remain a priority, we’d like to build a clear understanding of issues surrounding features such as UI to lay the groundwork for in-game improvements.

In this thread, we are looking specifically for feedback on the Galaxy and System Map UI. We have noted feedback on other UI elements, but would like to start with these in particular.

If you have feedback on the Galaxy and System Map in Odyssey, please leave it below in a reply using the following format:

Overall thoughts – please keep this brief (one or two sentences)

Specific Issues – clear and concise (bullet points are ideal)

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues

Please keep all replies to this post in the format above. Any discussion that is off topic or replying to other posts may be removed to keep the thread as useful as possible.

Thank You

Odyssey represents a huge change to Elite Dangerous at multiple levels. All of the teams across Frontier, are working hard to deliver an experience that meets a standard the community deserves.

On that note, thank you again for your support and patience. As soon as we have any more information regarding the points above, we’ll make sure to share it with you.

Edit: please use the edoperformance@elitedangerous.com mailbox to report optmisation issues in Odyssey rather than the Issue Tracker.
Overall thoughts : Simple really the Optimisation and Performance isn't working ! Before this optimising started I could play seamlessly in any instance, with every update the performance decreases.
At the point now where, although playable, it is painful.

Specific Issues : Game in general, not just Galaxy/system maps is suffering since optimisation started.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues : Rethink/remove present coding as it obviously is having a terrible impact on gameplay.

UI Feedback Just used the FSS scanner, can you explain why most of the planets are appearing as 'quarter-moon' pictures whereas before you could see the whole planet ?

Before trying to optimise (which isn't working as you can see from forum) try to fix the bugs in system map etc (see attached pic where fleet carriers now appear to be mission locations for missions I don't have) and then attempt to fix the mess better known as update 5 which has rendered playable missions unplayable.

EDIT :
Still no reply regarding the 'broken' system maps. Why are Fleet carriers suddenly shown as mission locations???? maybe UPDATE 5 !!

I´ve got similar problems since update 5. The stuttering is really gamebreaking.
Stuttering and hughes FPS drops at settlements:

FPS drops at stations when looking through the inter astra window:

Changing the settings to low doesnt change it nor does it have an impact on the fps drops. As described in the video, once the fps dropped they´ll stay low till I relog.

My sys.Specs:
win10/pro
i7 4770
gtx 1060 6gb
32GB DDR3 Ram
Intenso SSD

Best regards
a ed Cmdr

Changing Graphics settings that worked just fine before update 5, Why?? The problem is the 'optimisation' of update 5 not your PC. This is a problem for quite a few players who all have different system set ups and graphics capabilities, the only constant is UPDATE 5!

hello,
have the problem that graphics start to stodder immense on disembark on planetside with SRV near settlements, happened since update 5.
If I land free on a planet the stodder is less, but near a settlement it is really hard.
just happy that it doesn't end mauve adder :)

Dear FDev, can you please fix EXIT button, which doesn't work well for many screens, especially SystemMap where one has to wait until all planets surfaces are loaded. It is very inconvenient to be not able to exit immediately out of SystemMap in many situations.

Increase timer to 5-10 sec/remove LMB-click by system route creation, it's really annoying to fix distant laggy as hell routes, especially in abyss and galactic core region :D

I have huge FPS drops at settlements from 40-50 fps on low-medium (customized between the two) to 30s at settlements with Patch 5 now on the lowest settings ever possible. It appears the game is not using my GPU power for some reason (utilization stops at 50%), but when I crack up to high-ultra settings it bumps up to 100% as normal, but my FPS stays at around 30 FPS, no matter what the quality settings are.

Specs:
GTX 1660 Ti
Ryzen 5 1600x
16 GB RAM
Kingston A2000 M.2 SSD
Win10 pro
Playing on 1080p

Performance and FPS drop dramatically. What to do?
Here's a proof of a drop in game performance on my computer.

Hi,
I've made a workaround for the reflections performance problem (seen in windows, mission consoles, etc).
There's also a workaround for fires performance if you are on LOW settings (or FX quality on Off/Low).
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/some-performance-tweaks-fixes.583739/page-11#post-9403514

The closer your are to the reflections, the bigger the impact is on the GPU. When you are far from them, there's almost no impact.

Sadly, the global settlement performance is another problem (huge number of drawcalls from what i measured)

@Bruce G
I think we nailed the origin of those 'glass' fps problems (it's the reflections), there's enough people currently using this workaround with good results.
If fixing this is too complex, is it possible to disable reflections when using FX quality on Off or Low ?

Yes, as soon as I used that mod, at SOME settlements my FPS jumped to 70--80 (from 50) and now with version 3 I am even at 110 at some <3 (RTX 2060 with 2560×1080, native res)

If none of your cpu cores and gpu are maxed, then it's probably a drawcall problem (instructions from cpu to gpu).
Games that reach the drawcalls per frame limit are not very common. When you reach the limit, the stutters start, and if the number continue to rise, fps drops.

I measured over 11k drawcalls per frame, in some settlements.
10k : 55fps (draw distance min)
11.5k: 50fps (draw distance max, same spot)

I think we should be around 3-4k (2.5k for PS4/xbox).
There's only one EDO graphic setting that influence that number -> draw distance (10% between min and max).

->The only way to fix this is on the game side. Improving culling probably isn't enough because we need to go from 11k to 3-4k.
The only methods i know (but i'm not a 3d expert):

  • grouping some objects in one single object
  • grouping textures of an object in one single texture,
  • having objects LoDs (objects that get simpler with the distance).
  • lowering the maximum draw distance of some objects (it seems settlements are fully drawn from very far)
All in all, a lot of work

o7 cmdrs!
Ive managed to get a smoother gaming experience on my system and Im now able to play the game, even in a quiet good quality. (Although changing the ingame settings didnt help me at all before)
My Sys:

Win10
i7 4770
MSI 1060 6Gb
32 Gb DDR3
Installed on SSD

Since Ive got a nvidia GPU I used Nvidias Gforce experience/3D Settings. In general opitimise it to Power Priority. Firstly I changed it like that awesome dude described in this Video:
Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfujOxrrU_Y

Secondly improve Win10 for Gaming by activating the Game Mode.
Just press the Win Button and type in Game and switch it on.
Then optimize your Power:
Press Win Button again and type in Power. Go to power and energy settings and set it all to high Performance.

In Game Settings:
I used to play on 1080p and all on high except of shadows(both) to medium. To get the most FPS I didnt change SS to 0.85 but the resolution to 1600x900, because I got some glinchy asteriod textures when changing SS to 0.85.

Make sure to restart your PC before testing.

My Results:
Even on 1080p I managed to get most of the Time 30FPS+ on Settlements. Even if it drops below 30, its still kind a like smooth compared to the default Settings which really improved the game for me.
If I change the resolution to 1600x900 Im getting 35FPS to 55FPS on settlements and even If they drop, I dont have large gamebreaking laggs. On foot and with AMD fidelity CAS on it still looks quiet nice.
Hope this will help some Commanders aswell.

Fly Safe!
