Odyssey - What happens if you "die" while on foot?

We know in the rest of the game the are mechanisms to prevent you dying.
Ship explodes - escape pod - rebuy
Fighter explodes - only telepresence - go back to ship
SRV explodes - assumed telepresence - go back to ship

So what happens if you get wiped out in a gun battle in an outpost?
If you end up on the ship do the suits basically just contain avatars?
If it's just telepresence/avatars why do the suits need oxygen?

So many questions.....

In the SRV only manning the turret is through telepresence. It's your CMDR who's driving, not an avatar.

Nobody knows outside FD how this is going to work, yet if I were to make a guess, I'd say when you die on foot you return to the ship just like when you pop in the SRV.

Death will never be realistically depicted in videogames for obvious reasons, so no need for fancy explanations. If we get back to the ship after dying on foot, all my immersions will remain completely undisturbed.

The space ambulance will pick up your body, reanimate it, and nurture it back to normal health. This may take years, but fret not because time travel is possible in 3306 (but a well kept secret, which is part of discovering Raxxla - and don't ask me how I know this, alright? It'll blow your mind etc.) so in say 3309 they send you back to 3306 to precisely the time and place where you left off, but only a couple of seconds later. All potential memories will be wiped in order to avoid frying your brain (and the MiB documentary series from the late 20th century proved this is technically feasible already for some time).

So to you the CMDR it seems like you simply "re-spawn" in your ship, but ohhhh-noooo it's not that simple.

Frontier, if you're in need of a lore writer my rate is pretty reasonable.

how do other mmo's based on realism treat death? I'm constantly drawn to this game due it being based on realism, things like getting blown up and instantly teleporting does grate me a little but not really an issue at present because I don't die (I'm on the xbox) unless I choose to self destruct.

but on foot I recon death rates will increase so much that it has the potential to be frustrating

its the little details that bug me, it would be nice to have some official lore based around this and even have harsher consequences to "death"

Almost certainly, from the perspective of the commander being killed, it'll be handwaved as "you were injured and have been recovered by authorities to your ship/a prison vessel". Just like the magic escape pods.

And that's good IMO.

It doesn't need any overcomplication. It's a game, and dying in games always requires a bit of imagination and mental flexibility. You kick the can down the line by adding teleporters or cloning, players will find something in that that doesn't hold up under scrutiny. It's a pretend world, and pretend worlds will always have a point where the illusion of consistency breaks down, usually somewhere around death.

The only way around that is when you're not playing a consistent character, but we are so...

But I am interested in what happens to the corpses. Will others on the battlefield see your body blink away arcade-style, or will the "injured" commander be able to come back and teabag his own corpse?

It will be handled the Frontier way - the easiest possible way.

If killed on foot you'll be automatically teleported to the nearest medical facility and revived there. Akin to last docked location/nearest penal colony. In this scenario question remains - what with ship?

Either ship gets transported with you, or you get revived in your ship. I bet on ship revival as it's the closest asset to dying CMDR where one can be revived.

Escape pods aren't realistic either - as an explorer at the * end of the wood you could drift for centuries without being picked up. Thus I don't give a damn. I'll assume I was knocked out, my high-tech suit kept me alive long enough for the Whaaaaambulance (or MediCorp) to arrive and... bingo.

Your spacesuit has a miniature version of the same handwavium system fitted to your ship. 😐

If you want an in-universe explanation, your suit monitors your health, puts you in suspended-animation when your health is critical and then the same people come and rescue you who rescue you when your ship explodes.
