Odyssey - What happens if you "die" while on foot?

Everything become simple if we remember that we're not a CMDR, rather we're playing as ship's AI.
And CMDR is just a hologram (even if not stated, as in SRV), or maybe a human-shaped bot.

It explains everything, including how we can change the appearance any time via holo-me.
Even loss of the exploration data is explained - the AI just restored from the latest backup copy which does not have the recent information.
The same for instant teleportation when ship is destroyed in Beagle and you can respawn right in the Bubble in a Sidey.

So, my bet that we're playing the remaining Guardians AI who's pretending to be humans. That's why only CMDRs can respwn and NPCs can't (recently crew members are started to be replaced with the same holo/bot tech when hired, while real crew human is disposed to a Biowaste)

Definitely agree with having to respawn back on a station somewhere (like when you die in your ship currently), but you just respawn in the social space on the station. You then can transport your ship back to the station for a credit/time cost. If you respawn back on your ship like you do with SRV's then this will become a big issue with players just returning shortly after death to come back and kill you (If battling on a settlement).

I hope it'll be like the Culture novels where you download your current mindstate before you leave the ship and if you die a new body is grown by the ship and your mindstate downloaded into it.

I think the more important question is:

What do the other CMDRs see when a nearby CMDR gets killed?

Will they see a crumpled/charred body lying on the ground/floor?

Will the killed CMDR's carcase just fade away?

Will the killed CMDR's carcase be collected by some sort of medical vehicle?

The presumption I ran off of was that the ship somehow automatically recovers the body - if respawn back at ship is a thing.

I don't think it will be.

My expectation (and hope) is that 'death' in-person - be that in a settlement or in the black - will be the equivalency of a ship death. Respawn will occur at last docked station (or penitentiary under right circumstances), with ship rebuy accompanying any on-foot gear rebuy.

You got smoked. Which means your ship is pilotless (stolen, perhaps, or just drifting in supercruise till it runs out of fuel) and thus lost.
Lore wise, your smoked body was recovered (somehow suddenly) by Search & Rescue and brought back to be resuscitated.
Give the nature of medicine (like progenitor cells), this makes sense up until a point.

Like...Class 4 Plasma smoked you. But, you know, it's a game.

On an unrelated note....a ship lost (anywhere) due to on-foot death would be awesome for potential salvage gameplay. I'd love to see Elite incorporate salvaging of entire ships, a la X Universe, where the original ship is able to automatically return to dock with certain hardware installed (maybe a Class 5 or larger equivalency to the autopilot). Anyhow, on-foot adds lots of potential - ship interiors my personal favorite - for ship-based gameplay.

Doubt if we will get blood squib action or dismemberment. Heck, we only get visible ship damage on the Anaconda (until ships blow up).

Probably get warning messages from your suit,

"CMDR, seek cover immediately, your critical body functions are impaired!"

"CMDR, seek medical attention immediately, grievous bodily injury present!"

"CMDR, all is well, walk towards the Light, the journey continues..."

My guess is you pay money equal to the cost of the weapons and equipment you have on your character, you then respawn at the last station you docked in the lobby, and you have to wait for your ship to be transferred to the station and collect it from storage.

If you ship gets destroyed right after you die, you probably have to pay the insurance to get it out of storage.

All I can think about now is how many times I have died in the crushing jaws of a dragon all the while throwing random fireballs and curse words at city guards.

You respawn 1000ly away and you need to collect 1000 plant samples while your body recuperate.. wait... is collecting plant samples part of the gameplay ..seems missing from latest dev dairy.

Does every time a white knight posts a meme about the game being doomed, is that just to distract from a valid issue that hasn't been handled?

Noone said doom except for the white knight, and questions just need answers, nothing to do with doom.

Well, they can have the same people who can drop you off for ground stuff without ever needing a ship pick up your corpse as well, and make up a story that wouldn't be realistic as to why you're back. Having a ship blow up is different to getting a bullet in your head though. Either way it would have to be some sort of science fiction, there is no way humans survive projectile weapons to the head.

It would be hard to make something up, because you like to believe the world and when you're dead you're dead. Will be much easier to stomach when they just tell us.

Everything goes dark. After a medevac you wake up at the closest outpost hospital with insurance weenies and huuuuge medical bills to pay.

We know in the rest of the game the are mechanisms to prevent you dying.
Ship explodes - escape pod - rebuy
Fighter explodes - only telepresence - go back to ship
SRV explodes - assumed telepresence - go back to ship

So what happens if you get wiped out in a gun battle in an outpost?
If you end up on the ship do the suits basically just contain avatars?
If it's just telepresence/avatars why do the suits need oxygen?

So many questions.....

You know that while at SRV and ships goes boom, SRV aint is gone? You get stuck at SRV, and getting into rebuy screen only afta SRV is rekt as well or selfied.
In-game, if cmdr uses SRV it happens physically. Of course if SRV gets boom, player gets respawn at ship, but thats because of sake not makin a game too complicated.

Fact alone that suits need oxygen means that if cmdr leaves a ship, it happens physically.

I think there will be some kind of medical facilities around almost all space stations and planetarly settlements, where u can just respawn if got killed while on foot. Costs of being respawn? Same deal as currently with ships, it will depend on what gear/weapons you had at time, and maybe it will consider distance to nearest med center, but I dont think these costs will be anywhere more expensive than a small ship rebuy.

What about ships then? If it was not docked anywhere, then most likely it gonna be transfered (manually or automatically) upon death to current respawn location by additional cost, similar as current ship transfer works. I highly doubt if one would had to pay entire rebuy for ship, if it was not destoyed, while get rekt on foot, just image about amount of whine on these forums if it would be otherwise.

On other hand, if ship was already docked somewhere, it just gonna be there where it was left, and one will have call it manually by ship transfer or just use apex service to get at that location in order to board that ship.
