Off on a year long mission.

I take an AFMU, just to fill an otherwise empty slot, as it doesn't have weight, but haven't used it in over 2 million LY's and over 70,000 systems (or even powered it up). My entire circumnavigation was 635K and 25k systems alone, and only took 2% hull damage, due to my negligence of bumping the throttle while parked at a star. If it weighed anything at all I wouldn't bother taking it.

There you go then - if you have space you may as well take one. Better to have it and not need it and all that. ;)

Hmm, I cannot quite agree with that. Maybe it was the length of time I was out in the black or perhaps I made one or two hard landings, but despite my hull only degrading 11% my modules needed attention several times during the journey. If I didn't have the AFMU I would have had to cut the journey short I think.

I've got one, so I've been repairing stuff just because I can, but the things I never bother with or can't repair (PP, hull, cargo hatch) are all in the high 70s or low 80s after 24,000 systems and almost 16 months. All that damage has been due to careless or impatience on my part and was wholly avoidable. If you're running hot in a not very nimble ship I suppose the odd bit of heat damage jumping into close binary systems might be unavoidable but that's rare enough to not worry about.
