Off the shelf PC to run ED

Stay away from AMD. They shot both their knees many months ago. Hate to say so because I supported them for nearly 20 years. Their CPUs are mediocre, no matter how many they stuff in. Will just raise your power bills. Start with an Intel i3.

Hogwash, I use an AMD build and it works very well for less money. Bulit my PC for under 600$ (Canadian) 2 years ago and still plays everything I throw at it on high to full graphics setting depending on the game. It's getting due for an upgrade soon (maybe by the end of the year) but Elite runs like a champ on full graphics 60+ fps everywhere. AMD is great when on a budget.

Nothing wrong with amd cpu's, an fx4 4300 is a small amount of performance short of a i3 4130, and pulls ahead on multicore enabled games.
If you only have £450 to spend and i3 system will add big amount of price to his build and would end up with very crap gpu.
Amd are great for pc's on a budget, and besides biggest bottleneck is going to be the gpu whatever cpu he goes for.

Sorry but this is just false. AMD CPUs are fine.

If the cpu isn't up to much I'll steer clear. I have no interest in building a pc. I don't mind buying one without a graphics card and adding thatbut that's as much as I can be bothered with really. If it can't be done for less than about £400 I'll leave it as it will only be for playing ED.

That's actually a very good find for the price. That will run Elite quite nicely, just turn down the shadow quality and turn off blur and you should be good to go without too much loss in frame rate unless you go into the really heavy asteroid fields.

£400 quid to play a game... or £400 quid to spend on tea and chips for a long time.

The min specs are in the manual. I think you can get something around the £200 or less mark second hand if you just want to play Elite Dangerous adn still have lots of tea and chips.

Sorry i cant point toward a good deal. I'd hang on till February when prices have dropped and dropped again. Maybe pick up a refurbished unit with a one year warranty and a bit of house hold insurance in case it breaks if you are just getting it for a game. It's really buggy so you know it might be worth having a go on the cheapest thing you can lay your hand on rather than spend a lot. Reduce your speed and save your credit balance.

Thanks, it's nice to have it confirmed that it should be ok.

Go check out PC Specialist (www.pcspecialist.co.uk) - I've bought about four systems from them including my latest gaming monster and they are really good with competitive prices. The folks on the forums there will give you as much advice as you need, plus you can just call PC Specialist and have someone talk you through all the options.
