Horizons Offensive content of Newsletter #184

While I took no offence from the comic strip, I do feel someone somewhere will be getting a stern talking come Monday morning.

As others have pointed out is it not against forum rules to post pictures or videos which contain what some might define as foul language. Just noticed it in the news letter section.

I wasn't discussing if he is in the right on this. I said that this was a pretty big and unneeded overreaction.

So, having criticized the "overreaction", what do you think is appropriate; or are you one of those people that feels it acceptable to criticize without offering solutions?

...what? If my problem is people being too dramatic, what I want would probably be less dramatic posts and responses concerning this topic, don't you think. Which would mean not insulting "the duffus that allowed this cartoon", for instance.

Yep. Cringed myself when I read it. Aside from swearing thing it just wasnt funny to be honest.

Lots of funnier stuff out there if they feel the need to fill pixels on the newsletter with memes or cartoons etc.

Poor show newsletter editor.

I am extremely disappointed at the cartoon element at the bottom of newsletter 184 under the heading "PRIORITIES. THIS DAD KNOWS THEM".
Here on the forum and Frontier Developments in general come down hard on commanders' use of foul or offensive language, when they are guilty of such crass double standards.
I allowed a young and I might say impressionable lad to open my copy of newsletter 184 and to be fair it was the cartoon element he was naturally drawn to.
It was my fault for allowing him unfettered access to the newsletter while my attention was distracted, but I trusted Frontier Developments and their supposed stance on offensive language and behaviour in general.
You can guess my feeling when he turned to me and pointed at the newsletter and said "That's naughty isn't it uncle?" ...pointing at the "F" word in all it's blatant glory.
Lets just say his mother was not best pleased with me when little lad regaled her of what he'd seen on my computer while we were "playing Elite". OK there are worse things happening in the world but some families still do try to take a stance.
THANKS FRONTIER![mad]

100% Agree - there is no place for explicit language ("F" bombs) on a business site, and since (thankfully) vulgarity is not part of the in-game dialog it also shouldn't be in the game's newsletter.

Dear FDev, please remove the "F" bomb from your newsletter.

There was a Horizon episode about bad language. They said that they were magical words with magical properties. In an experiment involving the very potty-mouthed Brian Blessed, they showed that overuse of these words tended to dilute their potency.

I'm happy with the swear filter on the forum, and I only have the slightest concern of the use of bad language in the newsletter. If you are going to swear, please at least make it funny!

It is difficult to come up with something funny, but it's easy to spot somebody else's funny joke. If you feel the need to inject a little humour into the newsletters, what about a "joke of the week" competition?

Mild over-reaction = yes

Valid-point = yes

Removal from newsletter = largely pointless, it's already been sent out to everyone subscribed by e-mail, sure they can remove it from the forum link and website link but the damage is largely already done by this point.

It was badly drawn, badly written and not funny, that was more offensive than the swearing IMO and I couldn't work out why it had been included, filler possibly for a sparse issue?

Offensive?

Indecent, inappropriate, impolite, perhaps, but I wouldn't think it can be considered offensive, since it's clearly not targetting anyone with offense.

In be4 people who need a reality check call for someone to resign...

People mess up, it happens. It's right this was taken out, it's right that an apology is made but lets get over it and be glad this was actioned within 24hrs on a weekend.
I would hope the checks and balances are increased and it doesn't occur again, human error is a major factor but with appropriate control methods it's manageable, trying to do that is basically my entire job which leads me to the famous phrase "never call something foolproof because life will design a better fool" :p

If it happens again that is the point we should be waving pitchforks etc because they have missed the learning from the error.

Lightspeed I suspect Jenner has posted because either Jenner (or the mod team as a whole) were in contact with FD about it, there may be an FD post later when they start work on this Monday morning. Although personally I don't see the value in a copy/paste of the same words with an orange text box instead, I doubt the mod team would post something to that effect without it coming from a Dev anyway.

I'll accept their apology when other Commanders stop reading my ship name as "Queen C***iopeia" instead of the proper "Queen Cassiopeia" that they should be seeing when they encounter me in my Anaconda.

... of course swear filters in the game, the forums and a poor decision to include something in the Newsletter have nothing to do with each other so, like many others, I'm just using this as an opportunity to rant for the sake of ranting.

Sad part is ... I read the newsletter and didn't even realize that I should be offended until I tripped on this thread in the forums. Now I'm aghast and scandalized. ;)
